The alarm clocks were going off early as the Rebels had a near dawn 9am tilt to finish off their regular season. The boys in black and white needed to get the sleep out of their eyes fast; a win was needed to guarantee top spot on the ladder and a round one finals bye.
In their way was a tough finals bound Dingo’s team. Knowing the Dingo’s had already topped other finals teams in earlier rounds coach Bodz had one of the strongest lists of the season dressed and ready to send a message to the Dingo’s and any others scoreboard watching. A disciplined, committed and focused team would be needed to deliver the win.
The Rebels set the tone from the opening toss as the Dingo’s found themselves outmatched and outnumbered at almost every contest. Across all four quarters the Dogs simply had no answer for the strength and depth of the Rebels. The offensive charges the Dingo’s did make were met by a back-six that would prove near impenetrable all game. Led by Hegs, Philthy and Captain Scuba the talk was high and the shots on goal low.
Brownie and Digger were out but Baden was back in, joining Hodar, Best and Fairest runner up Ash and Rookie of the Year Steve-O in the guts. Again, the Dingo’s were unable to match the Rebels skill and athleticism up the middle. With Ash and Steve-O avoiding tackles with their usual teleporting three feet away at the last second tricks the mids fed the forwards consistently all game long.
Seeing plenty of action the Dingo’s defenders worked hard to hold the Rebels at bay, but it’s almost impossible to keep a determined Raccoon away from the crumbs. With Fabs stealing mark after mark in the square, and Murdock front and center all match the Rebels kicked goal after goal. With Kid leaving the game early, they needed and got a big game from Wizard. Inspired by the moving Martian performance of Matt “More Rugby World Cups than Ireland” Damon; Wiz was grabbing every mark…unless they were perfectly placed from 60 yards at his chest on the goal line… chest marks are hard.
By the fourth quarter, the Rebels had the win in the bag. Coach Bodz used the bench fully and switched many roles in order to further test the team’s depth and was rewarded as the Rebs showed their conditioning and continued their dominance.
