After a week off and the mid week Canada Day carnival the Rebels entered their Friday night clash with the Roos refreshed and keen to impress against the current benchmark in OAFL footy.
It seems that the Friday night fixture suits the Rebels with a full squad of 24 making it out to Humber South for the game. Included in the team was first gamer Matt Shcherban and former premiership player and prodigal son Troy Clarke.
The Roos won the toss and chose to kick to the city end which was favoured by a strong wind. The Rebels backline was soon under pressure with the Roos posting 2 early goals and Coach Monty was quick to make some moves to sure up the defence. This seemed to stem the tide a little but superior ball movement made it difficult for the Rebels to get any flow or time with the footy. After a couple more majors to the Roos the Rebels steadied out of the middle and were able to post 2 goals through Chris Behie and Peter Bormann.
The Rebels were looking for a strong second quarter with the breeze to peg back the 5 goal lead, but the Roos flooded their backlines leaving little space for the Rebels forwards. It was an arm wrestle for much of the quarter with the Roos posting the only 2 majors of the quarter.
The second half came and the Roos were starting to outclass the inexperienced Rebels and this was beginning to show on the scoreboard. The midfield led by Chris Behie was battling hard and Tony Tam was working well across the half back line. With pride on the line the Rebels were able to battle back for 3 more goals in the last quarter showing their never quit attitude which is sure to translate in some wins before the seasons end.
This week is the half way point of the season and the Rebels will play the Blues in what should be an entertaining match. Let’s all get to training and come out in big numbers again on Saturday.
