The Rebels take it to the undefeated Etobicoke Kangaroos

Rd 10 was always going to be a memorable night for the Rebels with the unveiling of the clubs new 20th anniversary jumpers and a milestone game for our newest 50 gamer Jeff Brand.

But nobody in the league could have or would have predicted what was going to happen in the first quarter of this one. The Rebels took to the field with a spring in their step and all the boys knew that getting a strong start was going to be essential in setting the tone for the game. With this in mind the Rebels jumped out of the blocks and kicked the first goal in a matter of minutes, the midfield was working well with Jon Bell getting a lot of ball early. A second goal soon followed and after another series of hard battles the duo of Monty and Pete were again looking menacing up front. The Roos sensing the danger applied more pressure but their efforts were not rewarded with any major scores. The Rebels continued to press with Chris Behie dominating the Ruck contests and the Rebels managed to add 2 more goals to take a 21 point lead into the first break.

With one their best quarters of Footy for 2009 behind them the Rebels knew that the undefeated Roos were going to come out with all guns firing in the second term. The first half of the second was an absolute arm wrestle, there were tight battles all across the field and both teams traded early goals. Some key lineup changes from the Roos did eventually return some fruit with a 5 goal to 1 term. The Rebels backline led by Sean Duffy were under siege and if not for some great individual efforts from guys like Marc Roche the half time margin of 10 points could have been much larger.

Some inspirational words from Craig Bradley at half time seemed to spur the Rebels again in the third term. Kieran Hess and Michael Fabbri were connecting well through the middle and once again it was an absolute arm wrestle all over the field. It was the Rebels turn to miss some shots at goal managing only 1.4 for the term vs. the Roos 2.2.

Entering the last quarter only 14 points adrift the Rebels needed to get on the board early and they responded with some great clearances, but once again some chances were missed and the Roos were able to rebound for a couple of goals of their own. With the game slipping away the Rebels again countered punched with a couple of goals, but alas it was not enough as the Roos eventually managed to come away with the victory.

This was certainly an entertaining game for all involved and the Rebels proved to themselves that with the right effort and commitment to ball that they can match it with any club in the competition.

Congratulations again to Drago on his 50th game and lets all get out to training this week in preparation for the much improved Swans.
