The Rebels defeat the Demons in the battle of the basement.

The Rebels went into Round 12 of the OAFL season hungry for a win knowing that the loser of the match with the Demons was destined for the wooden spoon.

With the Demons having the better of the Rebels in their past few encounters it was always going to be important to get off to a strong start. The boys did not disappoint with the midfield controlling the clearances with some great play from Kevin Duffy and the ever impressive Jon Bell. The Rebels had a majority of the scoring shots for the quarter and if not for some inaccurate kicking the lead of the 11 points at the first break could have been bigger.

The Rebels continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and with some great linkage play from the defence that continually drove the ball forward, Geoff Busch and Matt Dunnigan leading the way here. Peter Bormann continues to turn back the clock each week and he was a continual threat in front of goal again. The Rebels going into the break with a 5 goal advantage.

The second half started with the Demons down a man due to some injuries and with the Rebels having a full squad of 24 it looked like this one might be in the bag. With several players rotating off the bench the fresh legged Rebels managed to kick away with Aron Tonon and Craig Bradley kicking truly and the surprise packet Geoff Walker chipping in with 2 of his own (Talk about turning back the clock). The lead was now a comfortable 50 points.

The last quarter was a tough battle and credit must go to the Demons for continuing to put in until the final whistle. Kieran Hess continued his good form playing 4 consistent quarters and Peter Bormann finished off a great game with his career best 7th goal. The final siren went and the Rebels could finally celebrate their second win of the season.

This game certainly proved the importance of getting a full compliment of players to each match and the signs are good for the remainder of this season for the Rebels.
