The Rebels finished the year with a hard fought loss to the team from Guelph

The last Rd of the 2009 season saw the Rebels taking on the team from Guelph for the second time this year. The earlier encounter was a tough match but Guelph took the points in that so the Rebels were looking to turn the tables.

The first quarter got under way and before you could blink an eye the Rebels were on the board with some great link play from Matt Dunnigan, Michael Fabbri and the eventual goal kicker Kerin Sparks. A second goal was soon to follow with Peter Bormann in his 150th game snapping truly. A fantastic start for the Rebels. Guelph sensing the danger steadied and got a couple goals themselves and they were able to hold on to a slender lead at the first change.

The second quarter was a tight affair again with both teams getting plenty of the ball, but it was the Guelph forwards that ending up causing the most damage with some accurate kicking. This left the Rebels a few goals down at the long break,

As the game went on the squad from Guelph seemed to grow in confidence as they continued to use the ball well and make the most of some poor turn over’s from the Rebels. Ron Brennan continued his great season across Half Back and with the help of Tony Tam and Matt Dunnigan they were able to stem the flow of scoring.

With one quarter left for the 2009 season the Rebels made some changes to see if a comeback was on the cards. Unfortunately the bulk of the damage was already done and all the boys could muster was a couple more consolation goals. Nik Pappiaonou was again a solid player for the second game in a row and Kieran Hess finished of an outstanding season of footy with a great last term.

Congratulations once again to Peter Bormann on his 150th game and also congratulations on making this years OAFL All Star Team. Not bad for a Fossil!!

Also thank you to our coach Monty Burns who has officially stepped down as coach after 3 years. Monty has done a fantastic job with recruiting new Canadians and he leaves the position with some great building blocks in place for the next coach.

Remember that vote count and the banquet are both coming up and stay tuned for more details.
