RCC league match reviews 21/8

1st XI
Last Saturday on the Common the 1XI hosted Chorleywood in a Choice Cricket Centre sponsored match. Rain reduced the contest to 39 overs a side, but despite being invited to bat first Chorleywood were able to up the scoring rate in the latter stages of the innings to notch up 177 for 7. Redbourn got off to a rapid start with the Hales brothers, Captain Ed reaching his 50 off 33 balls, before Will was unluckily run out backing up with the score on 82 in the eleventh over. Ed fell for 79 in the 15th over with the score on 102. From there Dan Roe (42*) took charge and steered Redbourn home with four overs to spare. The win ensured the 1st XI will be promoted and will be playing in division 1 next season. A win against second place Abbots Langley away on Saturday will secure promotion as league champions.

2nd XI
Having defeated second place Baldock the previous week, the 2nd XI faced Welwyn Garden City away last Saturday. With RCC bowling first Richie Cann made an early breakthrough with WGC stuttering to 121 all out in 41.1 overs. Pavan Pankhania was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets for 14 runs from his allotted 10 overs. In reply, Redbourn lost a couple of early wickets but the reliable Toby Ascroft (39) and captain Dan Lennox (34*) steadied the ship and broke the back of the low total, reaching the target five down in the 23rd over. The 2nd XI are now 35 points clear at the top of div 5B and a win on the Common in their next match (sponsored by Redbourn Electrical Contractors) against third place Boxmoor will also see them crowned champions and promoted!

3rd XI
After trekking to Northwick Park in Wembley the 3rd XI's match was cancelled due to the weather. They remain safe in sixth place with neither promotion nor relegation feasible this season and play Dunstable at the Rec on Saturday.

4th XI
Rak Bajpai's 4th XI took on Chipperfield Clarendon at the Rec and made short work of it, bowling them out for 110 in 31 overs. Kish Pankhania took 5 for 23 in 7 overs and 13 year old leg spinner Tommy Everitt 3 for 15 in 5 overs. In reply after an early mix up with fellow opener Martin Benfield nearly leading to his run out, Crispin Hedges decided to take matters into his own hands. He brought his 50 up in around 30 balls while Benfield (eventually 25*) watched from the other end! Hedges continued in his display of power hitting, finishing with 68 not out (comprising 12 fours and 2 sixes) to win the match by 10 wickets in just 13 overs. The 4s need one point away on Saturday to Northwood to get promoted!
