10 man Litherland REMYCA suffer heartbreak against Chadderton FC

A chilly October evening, 90 minutes of football and a 2-1 loss summed up how Litherland’s season is going so far. REMY found themselves a goal ahead in the first five minutes but failed to capitalise on two big chances to get a firm grasp on their lead in the first 45. The second half was a case of defending George Huyton’s net from an onslaught of Chadderton attacks. The opposition were limited to just one goal until REMY were reduced to 10 men and the constant pressure proved too much as Chadderton found the winner with only 10 minutes to go.

Contrary to last week, it was a dream start for REMY. A mix-up between Chadderton’s goalkeeper and centre half left Christopher Happi-Fankam with only an open goal and the ball boy behind said open goal in front of him. Happi-Fankam didn’t let the illuminous green hi-vis put him off as he calmly slotted the ball home.

Four minutes later a driving Callum Cooney found himself with a yard of space on the edge of the box. His right footed effort narrowly missed the bottom left corner.

In the 22nd minute REMY were in again – no this isn’t a typo. Goal scorer Happi-Fankam picked up a long pass and dinked the ball over the on rushing Chadderton keeper but unfortunately just wide of the post.

The first half of football from REMY (and a half time brew) seemed to warm up a cold Wednesday night.

Chadderton’s equaliser came in the 60th minute as their man latched onto a through ball and slotted through Huyton’s legs.

REMY defended their goal valiantly for the majority of the second half.

In the 72nd minute a comment from REMY captain Bradley Elms was deemed enough to reduce the home side to 10 men.

Without the captain and starting centre half the pressure applied by Chadderton proved too much. Huyton pushed out a free kick but only to the feet of a Chadderton player who tucked his chance away.

The elusive three points will have to wait.

Litherland REMYCA remain bottom of the NWCFL on four points and travel away to Padiham on Saturday.
