Match Report- Litherland REMYCA FC 3-6 Glasshoughton Welfare

Extra time was needed in today’s FA Vase game between the REMY and Glasshoughton. Litherland had managed to bring the game back from 0-3 down, but were reduced to nine men before the end of regulation time. Glasshoughton piled on the pressure to finish the game, leaving the boys thinking of what could have been.

The game started scrappy, but the hosts were dominant, until Glasshoughton latched onto a heavy touch from the REMY defence. Nathan Perks took on Ben Morrow and slid the ball just past the keeper into the bottom left corner to give the visitors an early lead on 10 minutes.

After the goal, the home side struggled to find that killer pass, but were looking hard to break down, with Stephen Rothwell and Stephen King preventing the away team from getting further ahead.

Unfortunately Glasshoughton did further their lead on 23 minutes when the wind appeared to help a cross just skim the head of Nathan Perks and the ball flew past Ben Morrow to make it 0-2 to the away team.

The game was starting to get feisty between both teams and Fidel Mhlolo appeared to catch Paul Foy with high studs. The tackled seemed like a straight red, but referee Niall Eaves awarded the defender a yellow, much to the dismay of the home side. Paul Foy returned the favour to Mhlolo five minutes later and received a yellow himself.

Neil Monaghan then received a yellow for the REMY for a bad challenge and the resulting free kick was headed in by Nathan Perks for his hat-trick and on 32 minutes the REMY were down 0-3.

It was at this point of the game, where Josh Hamilton began to put in a man of the match performance for Litherland, completely controlling the play through midfield. It was his contributions that led to the home side making a comeback.

On 36 minutes, the ball was played in off a corner and was headed in by Neil Monaghan powerfully into the top left corner, leaving opposing keeper Jake Barton with no chance.

Hamilton continued to weave his way through defenders but nothing could come of the brilliant play, leaving the score 1-3 to Glasshoughton going into half time.

Josh Hamilton then started the second half how he ended the first, with a beautiful outside the foot pass curling past every opposition defender, where Paul Foy latched on to the pass and from outside the box curled an absolute peach past Jake Barton into the top corner, making the game 2-3 on 52 minutes.

The comeback was complete ten minutes later, when Hamilton passed the ball on a free kick cleverly to Lennon Whewell, who on an awkward angle squared the ball to Ste Rothwell, who toe slid the ball past Barton. The comeback was complete and at 3-3, the REMY were searching for a winner.

Litherland were down to ten men with fifteen minutes remaining, when David Crist was shown a second yellow card, for an off the ball incident. The boys were then down to nine men, after Neil Monaghan’s late challenge led to a second yellow card. Discipline would appear to cost REMYCA the game as it headed into extra time.

Straight off the whistle, Glasshoughton pulled ahead, when Ryan Hallsworth beat his marker and smashed his shot to rattle the ball off the bar past Morrow. The REMY keeper stood no chance against the powerful shot and the lack of men were changing the balance of play towards the opposition.

More off the ball confrontations led to the sin binning of Lennon Whewell and Paul Foy and the REMY for parts of extra time were playing with seven men.

Glasshoughton would capitalise on this, with Francisco Matos tapping in a cross in the box and Nathan Perks curling the ball past Morrow to make the score 3-6 to Glasshoughton at full time.

The REMY will be disappointed with the result of the game, as they appeared to be on the brink of winning and advancing. Unfortunately it was discipline that let the boys down on the day and Glasshoughton put their name into the hat for the next round.

We would like to thank the Glasshoughton fans who travelled for their support today and wish them well in the future.

Our next game is against Padiham away from home on Saturday and we would love it if you could join us there. If not you can keep updated with everything REMY on Twitter here.
