Match Report - Litherland REMYCA FC 1-2 Selby Town

An eventful game at Litherland Sports Park saw Selby Town defeat Litherland REMYCA 2-1 in the First Round Qualifying of the FA Vase.

The Northern Counties East Football League Division One team scored a goal in either half from Josh Street, who grabbed a brace. James Murphy grabbed a consolation goal from a penalty just before the final whistle.

The second half was perhaps the most eventful period of the game for all the wrong reasons as Litherland finished with 10 after Alex Ryan was sent off for the home side. There were arguments across the field from both teams.

As It Happened

Both teams had a fiery start to the game. In the first minute REMYCA were passing the ball with precision and a great cross went out for a corner. This was then cleared well by Selby who proceeded to break down the pitch and have a chance of their own. Credit to Selby who were dangerous on the break the whole match.

REMYCA had the first shot on target of the game, when Murphy skilled past his marker, his resulting effort was straight at the keeper. He was potentially the most dangerous player for the home side on the day. Ryan then followed this chance with one of his own. The spectacular shot went wide of the post.

It was end to end stuff throughout the first half and Selby had their first great chance, when Ryan Grier gave the ball away for REMYCA and Brad Freer crept into the box only to see his miss.

Selby broke the deadlock on 33 minutes. A short pass to REMY goalkeeper James Aspinall saw the shot stopper beat the chasing attacker. However, the shot stopper ran into Street, with the attacker then rounding the Aspinall and placing the ball into the back of the net.

REMYCA though hit back, striking the bar twice within two minutes. The first chance came off a corner, when Mike White saw his header smash the bar. The towering defender couldn't believe he had missed.

Paul Speed then had an even better opportunity. A cracking cross saw the midfield sweetly strike a thunderous volley against the bar. Selby needed to get to half time and luckily for them they saw out the 1-0 advantage until the whistle.

Second Half

Selby started the half strong, with an attack down the wing leading to a shot straight at Aspinall.

The pace from the away side was difficult for REMYCA to deal with and they should be happy with how successful this was on the day.

A serious looking injury to a Selby player suddenly died the game down. The opposition player appeared to be seriously hurt and we at the club hope he has a speedy recovery. However, the break in play around ten minutes into the second half seemed to take away the energy of the match.

Selby doubled their lead on 63 minutes, with Street grabbing his brace. He received a cross into the REMYCA box and rifled his shot into the roof of the net.

The game then took a darker turn, when fighting and arguments between players from either team resulted in multiple yellow cards and warnings from the referee, who appeared to lose control of the match instantly. This all resulted to a red card five minutes before the final whistle, when Ryan was given a straight sending off after a dangerous tackle on one of the Selby players.

REMYCA grabbed a consolation goal in the 90th minute. Colin McDonald was fouled in the box and Murphy converted the penalty, but it was too little too late for the home side.

Phil Stafford will have been disappointed with the discipline of his team and this contributed towards Selby progressing into the next round.

We would like to thank both sets of fans who attended today's game and complied with the rules and regulations regarding COVID-19.

We would also like to wish Selby Town the best of luck in the next round of the FA Vase and their upcoming season.

Our next game will be against Tadcaster Albion on Tuesday in the First Round Qualifying of the FA Cup. We hope to see you there and help us get back to winning ways.
