Choughs earn opening day victory
Rossington Main 0-1 Retford F.C.
Saturday 3rd August 2019
NCEL Division One
Oxford Street, Rossington
On a historic day for Retford F.C. they collected all three points as they made their debut in the Northern Counties East League. Just five years into their existence, The Choughs kicked off in Step 6 of the football pyramid for the first time. Chris Woodhead presiding over a 1-0 victory just 16 miles from home on a sunny August afternoon.
Hosts Rossington almost went ahead from the kick-off as Tom Foltyn-Brown almost capitalised on a mix up in the Retford defence, curling his effort wide of the far post. Retford also found it difficult in the early stages to get to grips with Main midfielder Jason Stokes. The NCEL veteran causing all kinds of problems with his composure on the ball. Stokes was the next to test the Retford defences as he curled a shot wide of the post.
After a period of settling though The Choughs hit the front in the tenth minute, Jon Kennedy searching for the head of Will Tomlinson, instead found a mix up between the Rossington centre halves Bytheway and Bucknall which allowed Evans-Booth to slip in behind and drill the ball past the advancing Butz and in the process become the scorer of the club’s first ever step 6 goal.
Rossington’s best chance of getting back into the game came very soon after as the Bytheway headed a well worked set piece over the bar from inside the six yard box. That was as close as they would come though on an afternoon where the defences would have the better of the game.
Retford grew into the game as time went on and caused most of their trouble through the wing play of Adam Scott and Josh Street, the pace and trickery of both giving Curtis Mann and Owen Hall a difficult afternoon.
In the second half both sides were difficult to break down but Retford got more of a hold on Stokes and the lively Bailey Conway in the 2nd half and this resulted in the Choughs having much more control in the 2nd half.
Rossington brought on the experienced Zeph Thomas but he wasn’t able to make any kind of inroads against the experienced duo of Severn and Burgin who were colossal for the visitor throughout the afternoon.
The best chances of the second period both falling to Retford but Will Tomlinson didn’t connect well with a ball which fell kindly to him on the edge of the area and Evans-Booth raced clear to drag a shot well wide in stoppage time with literally the last kick of the game.
Still it was a satisfying opening day for the newly promoted Choughs who started life in step 6 with a clean sheet and three points. Man of the Match Tom Burgin
