Welsh Trophy Round 2

Rhos Aelwyd and Penycae were to meet for the first time in a while competing for progression in the Welsh Trophy. With Penycae being in a higher league the pressure was all on them.
It was Penycae who settled into the game first with Rhos looking a little nervy. The nerves continued when there was uncertainty at the back, Steff Parry in goal eventually claimed the ball but was unfortunately injured by his own player. Fortunately for Rhos, they had goalkeeper cover on the bench and Huw Rowlands came on for the injured Parry. It wasn't long for Rowlands to be called into action when the Penycae central midfielder was able to get a clear shot at goal. Rowlands was able to save the ball and the follow-up hit the side netting.
Rhos did have their chances and the Penycae keeper had to make a very good save from Jamie Rogers, his shot was destined for the corner only for the finger tips of the keeper diverting the ball wide. The game did continue to be a little scrappy and there wasn't much more to talk about in the first half only for the Penycae striker seeing his shot tipped over the bar. HT 0-0
The second half saw Rhos take more control of the game, they began to win the first and second ball and win individual battles all over the pitch. The breakthrough came from an unfortunate own goal from a Penycae defender. Scott Reeves whipped in a cross that was inviting for any striker, but the Penycae defender intervened and guided the ball into the back of the net. 1-0
Penycae were looking to pull one back and nearly did but Rowlands was equal to the shot and palmed the ball wide. With Penycae looking for the equaliser, they were leaving spaces open, it allowed James Haynes to have time to deliver his pin-point cross for Ryan Jenkins to rise above everyone else and plant the ball into the corner and score Rhos Aelwyd's second goal. 2-0
James Haynes nearly scored only for a smart save from the keeper and Jamie Rogers' shot went narrowly over after a lovely through ball. FT 2-0 Rhos were worthy winners against their neighbours and ensured they did what they needed to win the game and progress into Round 3 of the Welsh Trophy V Llanberis.
Come on the Aelwyd!!!
