Rhymneys strong start to the season continued with a 5-3 victory away to newly promoted Penygarn and Trevithin.
Just like last week it didn't take long for Rhymney to get in to their stride and score an early goal and stamp their authority on this game. A brilliant dummy by Richard Brannan on the edge of the box in the 3rd minute allowed the ball to run through to Steven Duggan who layed it off to James Jenkins to smash home from close range.
Steven Duggan continued his impressive start to the season and the winger again turned provider for James Jenkins in the 14th minute when some poor defending from the hosts allowed James Jenkins far to much space in the box to slot home his 2nd goal of the game. 2-0 Rhymney!!
Things got even better for Rhymney in the 28th minute when left back Lewys Jones made a great run in to the box before being upended by the oppositions defender who was lucky not to see a red card brandished by the referee and at least be cautioned. With the penalty taker dilemma still going on after James Jenkins missed from the spot last week it was Steven Duggans turn to step up to the plate. The keeper made a great save but fortunately for Steven Duggan he parried it straight back to him to finish off at the second attempt of asking.
Rhymney were really benefitting from the great playing surface and it suited their style of play. On the 32nd minute some great play by Michael Knight who threaded a pass to James Jenkins who squared the ball for Phillip Brannan to grab his 3rd goal in as many games.
Rhymney looked to be coasting to a large victory but on the 37th minute the hosts were handed a way back in to the game when a freekick on the right was diverted past Andrew Jones in goals by Steven Duggan.
4-1 to Rhymney at half time.
Marc Bishop was brought on at half time to replace captain Lloyd Jones who suffered a knock in the first half. Further changes were made due to knocks to Phillip Brannan and Richard Brannan with Ian Gould and Steven Carroll coming on. Thankfully the knocks sustained don't seem too serious and all three should be available for Tuesday's home game against Nantyglo.
The first half was played at a high tempo and unfortunately the second half turned scrappy. It took until the 77th minute for the first opportunity of a goal and it arrived when Christian Davies was blatantly pushed over in the box and Marc Bishop stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way. 5-1 Rhymney!!
Just when Rhymney thought they were home and dry a 79th minute tussle in the box resulted in a penalty to the hosts and surprisingly a straight red for centre back Jason Lee, a very harsh decision by the referee who didn't have the best of games. Penygarn and Trevithin converted the penalty to make it 5-2 with just over 10 minutes to go.
The hosts made it 5-3 in the 87th minute punishing the tired 10 men of Rhymney but that's as good as it got and Rhymney battled to the final whistle to seal victory.
3 wins from 3 and now onwards to Tuesday when Rhymney host Nantyglo up the Eisteddford field.
The question is can Rhymney make it 4 wins in a row???
