Smith's scorcher pick of the goals as Riverside beat Viagra

Sean Laird

Captain for the day Terry caps a full 90 minutes with a long range strike

The last game on the new pitch for the season saw Riverside hosting Inter Viagra senior vets. It was good to see many familiar faces; they have been regular opponents over many seasons. They are all over 50 so a lot of grey hair (where hair is still present) but can still play some nice football.
We were light on numbers going into the fixture with a few injuries and babies interfering with availability. We lined up Beggsy in goal, Danny H, Stu T, Pat and Hoff across the back, Kris, Terry, Tom and wee Gav in the middle and Trev and Tommy R up front. Tim, Fish and I were on the bench.

It was a lovely warm day for football, and a little humid. Watching from the bench the pace of play was very similar to Mexico 1970, the ball bobbling and no one that bothered about running too much in the heat. Our younger lads were the exception, with wee Gav charging around and Stu T bossing the defence. We got a breakthrough with a long pass from Stu gave Gav the chance to outpace their defender and finished with typical calm. The rest of the half descended into a torpor.

Tim gave the team a rocket at half time and we were well up for it. Viagra, on the other hand (despite the adverts promising 4-6 hours of ready), were drooping. Stu T moved up front with Hoff going into centre back. He quickly set up Gav for his second with a through ball and a similar calm finish. We rotated the team with Tommy R having to leave and Stu T and Gav coming off setting the scene for the TST to take control. Rolling back the years Terry was getting into some very advanced positions. A good move down the wing and cross from Tim to Tom C who then rolled it across for Terry, 25 yards out dead centre. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the (ZZTop style) goalie was off his line and lofted a Ronaldinho style shot high over the keeper's head that dropped just under the bar. A scorcher! We grabbed our fourth on the final whistle with a nice move again from Tim to me and then an easy pass to Tom C who stepped inside the last man and calmly passed it into the corner of the net.

A big crowd witnessed the game, with Bantock popping in, big Gav, Thursday Matt, Sunday Adam, numerous wags and kids, big Rich with his baby and pram, Els with his baby and pram, and Reece reffing.
