Grimsby Borough 2 Rossington Main 0
Blues lose out to high flying Borough
Alec Denton and Jason Stokes made way in the starting line up for Rob Ludlam to slot in at left back and new signing Iren Wilson replaced Denton in attack.
Iren Wilson made a bright start to his blues debut after leaving his marker picking daisys and his shot then rebounded back off the post 6 minutes into the game. Iren Wilson was again a thorn in the Grimsby defences side as he ran towards them and was kicked two feet into the air. Lee Holmes took the free kick. His shot was curling towards the top right corner and the Grimsby keeper dived a got a hand to the ball topush it wide for a corner. A save many Premiership keepers would have been proud of never mind step 6 of non league.
Iren Wilson again caused the Grimsby defence all sorts of problems as he beat his marker down the left wing, cut inside the penalty box and his low shot was scrambled clear for a corner. The blues had the better of the play and possession for the opening 25 mins.
A blues corner was headed back across the goal mouth by Rob Ludlam and Grimsby managed to get the ball hoofed clear away from their area. Which then turned into an attack with Grimsby putting the ball into the goal with basically their 1st real chance on goal. Flashbacks of last weeks home draw with Glasshoughton after all the good play and possession we had against them and then conceded,
The blues composure wobbled for 5-10 mins after conceding a goal against the run of play. Then settled down again with the 5 minutes remaining of the 1st half.
The blues started the 2nd half with Callum Fielding making a great save low to his right. Rob Ludlam broke down the left wing and played the ball to Declan Howe. He ran with the ball to the edge of the box and cut inside beating his man. Howe then shot and the ball went just wide of the right upright.
Howe was causing problems down the left side and he was brought down for a foul. A couple of Grimsby players became involved and Harry Bamforth (the Sheffield Gattuso) and he made 5 new friends after a friendly chat with them.
5 mins later Harry Bamforth made a defence splitting pass to put Declan Howe away down the middle towards the edge of the Grimsby area. The defence eventually crowded out Howe and booted the ball upfield.
A free kick on the left of the blues area was pumped into the box when the Grimsby attacker spotted the ball into the blues goal at the back post.
After the goal the blues lost their rhythm a little bit but the effort was still there. A very flattering win for Grimsby as the blues gave a good account of themselves.
