19th May was just another youth coaching session, and I was prepared to help organise the end of season fun day. It was a complete surprise to see so many friends there to welcome me to my last coaching session as Youth Co-ordinator. Indeed, it was overwhelming that so many of you had turned up to wish me well. It was fantastic to see, alongside current youth members and parents, so many ex-players, some who I have coached, and colleagues who I played alongside. It was particularly nice to see so many ex-youth committee members who have supported me over the years.
There were so many there that I did not get a chance to see you all, so please accept my apologies if we were unable to speak but my gratitude goes to you all for getting up so early to join me on a very special, and somewhat humbling, day.
I would especially like to thank those from the Management and Youth Committees who organised the brilliant day and for the lovely speeches from James T, Danny, Tom and James S, and the kind comments that people made.
I know I should not use the same adjective again, but it was a truly overwhelming morning and one I will remember for ever. The presents given to me are amazing, and I thank you so much for them as well as the cards and messages. The cake was fantastic as was Archie’s portrait of me and the collage of pictures from over the years some of which I cannot remember. The signed GB shirt presented by Tom and the book from Gavin will be treasured. Your very generous gift of a holiday at Warners Hotels and the weekend at Lee Valley were totally unexpected and were perfect gifts.
As you know, Hockey is in my blood, and I have loved every minute of my involvement in our club. I remain as enthusiastic as ever and will always be available if I can help or give advice. The reception I received on Sunday was very special and your support over so many years has been particularly precious to me. I have been proud to represent Rotherham Hockey Club and thank everyone who has helped me with our many activities and achievements both on and off the pitch.
Best wishes for the future.
David
