I visited Chris on Saturday 9th February and literally bumped into him in the corridor of Osborne Ward at Sheffield Spinal Injuries Unit.

He was doing exceptionally well to propel himself in his specially adapted wheelchair. We had a good long chat during which time he informed me his physiotherapy and occupational therapy teams are helping enormously. This was clearly evident in his mobility and whilst Chris remains weak and struggles in many areas, he continues to be very positive which is testament to himself, his family and the support network that is in place. Chris still has limited movement but is determined to help himself as best he can. He tells me they are looking at a discharge date in March and that the process to turn the home garage into living quarters is progressing nicely.
Chris has now re-applied to attend university after a number of deferrals and is really looking forward to getting started with his academic career. His interest is in the architectural field.
He asked about all aspects of RHC and sends his best wishes to all involved. Like the rest of us, he hopes we can turn the team fortunes around by attracting players and improving team positions in the leagues. I mentioned to Chris that we are aiming to have a VP day in March and have invited him along once it is confirmed. If all goes well, he would love to attend. It would be great to see him and his family there.
We discussed the appeal and fundraising activities and I explained that we had a number of items for an online auction that would eventually take place. I showed him a number of photographs of the items proposed for auction which include a squad signed GB shirt, a Barry Middleton signed hockey stick and signed George Pinner kickers and pads. He was overwhelmed by the generosity and work being undertaken on his behalf. I asked Chris if he and his family had discussed what they would like to do with the funding obtained. A number of ideas have been suggested along the lines of a portable wheelchair ramp; contribution to a special wheelchair and other things designed to make his life at home that much easier. Of course, further discussion with Chris and his family will be required to determine the best use of the funds so far raised.
Chris continues to be supported by Gavin Featherstone who remains in contact. Gavin is presently arranging for Graham Bell (himself wheelchair bound) who is a very well respected coach in his own right, to visit Chris and discuss coaching opportunities as Chris remains very interested in this aspect of sporting life. Chris tells me he wants to do some club coaching in future to keep in touch with RHC.
Let’s continue to support Chris and his family as a club and as individuals. I know how important this is to them all and how much it is appreciated.
James Swinscoe
