The Ladies first away fixture saw them head north to face Newcastle University Women’s Second XI.
The sun shone yet again and the travelling supporters were out in force!
Rotherham started strongly, putting into practice the principles they have all been working on in training. Excellent work from Emily Riley and Katie Houghton found the team having several attempts on goal, but unfortunately they were unable to convert any of the opportunities created.
Rotherham sustained a prolonged period of Newcastle University attack with Beth Scanlon, Olivia Clough and Nairne Clarke making some outstanding tackles and goalkeeper, Jess Rodgers, mopping everything up behind them in a way we’re coming to expect, maintaining the 0-0 scoreline. The team continued to get plenty of defensive short corner practice, a string of which were successfully defended, but Rotherham finally conceded late into the first half after a deflected shot wrong-footed Rodgers. The half-time scoreline of 1-0 was a fantastic achievement!
The second half saw the Rotherham side start confidently, buoyed by their first half performance and determined to get their first goal of the season. Again, the midfield of Anna Hogarth, Lucy Hucknall and Kate Burgin supported the attack, but that elusive first goal remained just that. There was only so much pressure that the Rotherham defence could withstand, and the incessant Newcastle University attack resulted in a further three goals being conceded by the away side.
The final score was 4-0. The team were kindly praised by the opposition coach for their approach to the game and determination and fight throughout. Spirits remain high and the whole team and their army of supporters are excited to see how their performance continues to improve week on week. Thanks to all the parents who drove, allowing the players (me) to have a rest on the way home! – Much appreciated!
Player of the Match was a close call this week with Jess Rodgers and Emily Riley receiving several votes from the team, but the overall winner was Lucy Hucknall – Well deserved after an outstanding performance in the centre of midfield.
The Ladies are back at home next Saturday to face Leeds Adel Ladies 1st XI; 1.30pm start. Let’s get that goal!!
