A great day of Rugby League today that saw a full programme of events. The day started with a shirt presentation from RERL Legend Pud Cowburn and he impressed upon the players just how important beating the Gunners is to every Sapper serving or not.
The day then saw us provide a fit, strong and fast Royal Marine side with some opposition IOT to prepare for their Traf Cup campaign. The game was a tough test for our development squad but as ever, we learn the most from defeats.
The main event was the Sapper v Gunner game and what a game it was. It had it all and tha k fully the Sappers managed to hold on and retain that cup for another year.
After the game, Cpl Gav Nichol was presented the Man of the Match piece by Lee Traynor on behalf of his company PRONTOIMAGES and the cup was presented to RERL Skipper Spr Marcus Mercer by Col Chass from ASCB (A Gunner...).
RERL would like to thank our new team wear sponsor HELYX, our warm up T sponsor Mid Kent College, our supporting charity SAPPER SUOPORT and the wonderful team at PRONTOIMAGES.
The players were brilliant, they played with heart and #SapperPower. The #SapperWall is strong and the team is ready to challenge for the Lawson Cup once again.
The management and coaching team have done a great job from top to bottom. Club Sec Maj Jon Auld was in attendance and team managers WO2 Simon White and WO2 Jock McClay steered the ship from start to finish. The coaching team of SSgt Mike Thompson, Cpl Chris Burke and LCpl Phil Williamson made sure the team were ready and managed the on field game plan superbly.
Special mention goes to WO1 Carl Abraham on his final Sapper v Gunner. He has been apart of this game for many years and will hold this game fresh in his memory through and into retirement.
Well done all. Great day.
#SapperPower
