Rugby Welsh 18 Market Harborough 2nds 38
A developing Welsh side put up a spirited performance, with plenty of positives, against a well drilled Market Harborough side, who proved too strong, particularly in the final stages of a hard fought game.
On a blustery afternoon, Welsh were forced into late reorganisation, following in injury in the warm up to Jack Taylor. However with the benefit of the conditions in the opening half Welsh began well with the forwards, especially the back row of Iolo Hughes, James Hughes- Woods and Adam Harris carrying well. James McGill always looked dangerous with the ball in hand but to Harborough’s credit their defence was strong, a feature throughout.
Eventually the pressure told and quick hands from the backs following a ruck, enabled winger Archie Gall to cross over in the corner for a try, well converted by McGill. Within five minutes , a similar passage of play with Lloyd Pulford in particular playing a strong part, again saw Gall show good pace as he finished off the move for an unconverted try.
Market Harborough began to get more possession as the half progressed and Welsh defended under their posts well, but eventually they conceded an unconverted try in the final move of the half. The second half saw Harborough carrying well and Welsh struggled to prevent their momentum with their youthful flanker and powerful outside centre causing problems in the home defence. They levelled the scores with a converted try but with centre Harry Wray running directly Harborough conceded a penalty which McGill kicked over.
Harborough continued to go through their phases well and two quick tries one of which was converted gave them the lead by the hour mark. Welsh narrowed the gap with another well struck McGill penalty but any chance of league points were extinguished in the final 15 minutes of the game as Harborough’s strong fitness levels and experience proved too much as they scored two converted tries.
Despite the loss the team are making good progress in a league which is proving to be stronger than last year. This week Welsh travel to Leicester Lions 2nds kick off 3pm
