Woodrush 2nds 0 Rugby Welsh 50
On another cold wet afternoon Welsh visited another new club for the first time in a friendly fixture and came away with an encouraging performance and victory. This match gave Welsh the opportunity to field some of the their less experienced and newly arrived players and they all contributed well to the victory.
Welsh began brightly and from the opening kick off Jason Warren burst through the defence and off loaded to Jamie Roche who raced in for a try converted by Glenn Bond. The forwards set an excellent platform with debutants Brett Ford and Jordan Rowbottom at the heart of the action. This enabled the backs to show off their skills with Jack Taylor and Robin Tyerman causing plenty of problems for the home defence. With the Bond brothers also combining well it was no surprise that by half time Welsh were further ahead with Taylor scoring a hattrick of tries, all converted by Bond, and one through Tyerman.
The second half saw the introduction of Jamie Fretwell who along with and Alex Jackson- Bridges performed well on the wings, whilst Nathan Watson gave a fully committed performance in the pack. The half started well with good handling enabling Tyerman to score his second try. To Woodrush’s credit they kept working hard and with the weather getting colder and stoppages in play due to injuries Welsh lost some of their momentum. However they remained in control and finished the game well with Matty Richards crashing over for a try following a powerful run from the returning Loz Galleno and Jack Taylor completed an excellent performance with his fourth try, converted by Bond.
A good runout and preparation for this Saturday’s Clonwell Cup tie at Alwyn Road against Old Laurentians 2nds. A good local crowd is expected for the 2:15 kick off.
