In a game played on a heavy pitch with the rain sweeping in Linnets Ladies broke new ground today with a 4-1 victory at Lingham Park against Upton Woman. Injuries and absentees forced Manager John Pickering into switching his side around and reverting to an unfamiliar back four from the previous week. The play switched from end to end in the early stages with Lile Ashley putting a shot wide of the post in the 9th minute. Before providing the assist for Marcia Jones-Sacharewicz to score two minutes later. Almost immediately Molly Hewitt could of doubled the lead had she kept her shot on target with just the keeper to beat. The pre match discussion was spot on with the home tactics and only a fine tackle by Beth Graham averted the danger in the 17th minute. On 20 minutes Ashley made it 2-0 getting the better of the Upton defence and beating the advancing keeper. Before shouts of a penalty were waved away by the referee as Jess Bazley was taken down in the penalty area. Upton then had their best spell forcing three corners before catching the Linnets cold with a high ball over the top. With the half drawing to a close the Linnets should have scored a third but the chance was wasted.
HT Upton Woman 1 (40) Runcorn Linnets 2 (Jones-Sacharewicz 11, Ashley 20.)
The first goal in the second half was going to be the crucial one and it fell to the Linnets on 48 minutes as a Becky Barker through ball found Ashley who made no mistake. As Upton pushed forward Megan Pickering made a decisive save to deny the home forward on 55 minutes. As Upton enjoyed a period of sustained pressure the Linnets were content to soak it up before another wasted chance went begging on 78 minutes. Five minutes later substitute Walton released Jones-Sacharewicz and it was game over on 83 minutes.
FT Upton Woman 1 (12) Runcorn Linnets 4 ( Jones-Sacharewicz 11,83. Ashley 20, 48).
Runcorn. Pickering, Isherwood, Gillies, Finnegan (Cawley 84), Graham (Walton 80), Rogers (Russell 58), Barker, Bazley, Hewitt (Middleton 45), Jones-Sacharewicz, Ashley (Bennett 80).
Manager John Pickering stated before the match he'd take a 1 nil win today with an eye very much on the conditions. In truth Runcorn who have found the net so easily in their first two games were guilty of several missed chances today which would of put the game to bed earlier. But a win's a win and its three more points.
POM Becky Barker.
