A Tail of 2 Strikers

If you were keen to write a report on a football match the first half of this one would not be high on your list. Very little happened. With Ruthin Town in 6th place and keen to maintain that position, Conwy probably needing one more win to make sure they were safe, you would be forgiven for expecting a better game. Ruthin played some nice stuff at times but lacked the final ball, Conwy huffed and puffed with a shot or two but nothing to show for it. There was one redeeming feature and that was the quality of some of Conwy’s tackling. On a number of occasions they stopped the visitors with good, strong, clean tackles. Tackling is a skill in itself and it was nice to see, even if it was against the boys in blue.
If very little happened in the first half something special happened in the second. Corrig McGonicle has made his name as a goal scorer, he is recognised as one of the best in North Wales. He could end up as the top goal scorer in the Huws Gray Alliance this season. He was standing just inside the box a yard to the right of Ryan Goldston’s left had post. He followed the ball as it came over and half volleyed it into the top corner giving Ryan in the Ruthin goal no chance. Corrig will be hard pushed to have scored a better goal – class.
This served to liven Ruthin’s effort but they were guilty of trying to get the ball forward too early, trying to make the difference with a killer pass. Their slow patient build up play was lacking. They did get the ball into the net after a well worked move finished with Gwidion Ifan, who had a good game, driving the ball past the keeper. The referee had other ideas and blew for a tug of a shirt from a Ruthin player.
With time running out for Ruthin enter another goal scorer. Llyr Morris is making his name as a To goalscorer, he is recognised as one of the best in North Wales and he could end up as the top goalscorer in the Huws Gray Alliance. He received the ball in the penalty area with his back to goal. In one movement he controlled the ball and turned. His shot was low and into the corner, a really good goal. 1-1.
It remained 1-1 and I suspect neither side were at their best, Ruthin certainly were not. However, four games unbeaten and only a wonder goal conceded in four games they can march on with confidence.
Oh! And the battle for the league’s top goalscorer? Corrig McGonicle on 18 Llyr Morris on 18. As good as Corrig is, give me the man from Llanfair, Dyffryn Clwyd every time!!!
