A good workout for the large squad down at Enfield.

Walden travelled down to Enfield onThursday night for their second and final warm up game.
A good turn out despite some players having to give the game a miss due to work commitments and holidays, but it gave a chance for the new Walden players to blend in with the some of regulars from last year.
The game was played in good spirit throughout and was a tough test as Enfield piled on the pressure in the first 20 mins and as always were strong in the scrum and set piece.
Walden when they got the ball showed glimpses of the running rugby we have come to expect. Towards the end of this period Walden showed some determined defence as they repeatedly held out phase after phase as the home team were camped in the visitors 22. Some great technique held out several driving mauls one of Enfields traditional strengths.
Then came a chance to turn defence into attack and Walden were swift in getting the ball out to left wing and sevens specialist Vili Navia who used his pace and strength to round his opposite number on the half way line and then hand off the full back to sprint over the try line to score in the corner. 5 - 0 on the half hour mark.
In the second half Walden upped the intensity as they started to gel in attack and it was not long before replacement left winger Ben Nash combined with centre Mark Kimberley with some slick passing to send last years top try scorer over unopposed under the posts, fullback Tom Price kicked the conversion to increase the lead to 12 – 0 after 60 mins.
A lapse in concentration 5 mins later as the Enfield winger gratefully gathered a loose ball and split the Walden defence to narrow the gap to 12 – 5.
But Walden regathered their composure regaining the ball from the kick off and backs and forwards combined and flanker Andrew Lancaster was on the end of fluid move to dive over the line for another converted try. 19- 5 65 mins.
The last 15 mins was all Walden as all the extra work in pre season began to pay off and if it wasn't some desperate defence by the home team they would have stretched the lead.
However I'm sure both sides came away from the game satisfied with the outcome and Walden can now look forward to the first game of their league campaign when they host Sudbury on the 3rd September for a 3pm kick off. Please come along to Henham to cheer them on.
