Walden come out on top after a well contested game played in the right spirit.

A great afternoon of Rugby with both teams entertaining the good size crowd.
Fly half Paul Marshall kicked off and Romford let the ball bounce, Ben Stapleton was first on to it to set up a couple of phases sucking in defenders before the ball was fed out to left winger Vili Navia who jinked over the line to score Walden’s first try 5 – 0.
Romford came back strongly to score a well worked try in the corner to level and then kicked a penalty when Walden strayed offside to go 3 points in front after 10 mins.
Then from the restart Romford again failed to gather and once more Vili scored in the corner putting Walden back in front 12- 8.
Three minutes later Walden turned the ball over in the centre of the field and Captain Mark Kimberley was put through a gap to score wide out to extend the lead to 17 – 8, with still only 15 mins played.
However Walden’s defence was soon tested and Romford scored 2 quick tries one converted to go back in front at 17 – 20 23 mins.
The game finally started to settle down as both sides defensive structure started to work a little better, with Walden looking threatening wide out and a great move down the right saw winger Adam Miles take the ball into space pass to full back Oscar Norman who in turn set centre Kimberley through to score under the posts, but made a hash of the kick but Walden were in front at half time 22 – 20.
Within 5 minutes of the restart Romford were in front once again when they created an overlap on the right to score wide out. 22 – 25.
But Walden were starting to gain the upper hand as they reverted to last years set up with Paul Marshall at Scrum-half and Tom Price coming on as flyhalf creating quicker ball and using it well as they camped in the Romford half. Finally the pressure told as back row Alex Packenham-Walsh making his league debut used his strength to hold off a couple of defenders as he powered over the line. Price kicked the extras 29 – 25. 50 mins.
This time Walden would not let the lead slip with some good defence and couple of good breaks notably by Adam Miles that did not quite result in another score. But Walden were gradually getting the upper hand and finally sealed the game with 10 mins to go. Deep inside their own half they elected to pass the ball and some great interplay between backs and forwards eventually saw flanker Ben Stapleton on hand to race over from 20 metres out. Final Score 36 – 25.
Next Saturday Walden Host Cantabs for a 3pm kick off.
