Walden keep up the pressure at the top of the table.

Walden travelled Norwich rfc in good spirits with unusually both 1's and 2's playing away together which is always difficult to organise with the league and merit tables as they are.
For the first time in months the sun was out and weather was dry although there was a stiff breeze blowing the length of the pitch and Walden played into this in the first half.
However they were soon on the attack and from several phases of possession they moved the ball up field and centre Mark Kimberley broke through after some slick passing and went over near the posts. Full back Tom Price converted 7 – 0 4 mins.
Norwich kicked off and 5 minutes later managed to force Walden to stray offside 25 mtrs out and narrowed the gap to 7 -3.
Norwich with the wind at the backs let a couple of try scoring chances go begging as the final pass went astray. Then on the 20 minute mark Walden worked the ball deep into the home 22 and stayed calm as the Norwich defence initially held firm but as they were worked one way and then back the other eventually there was an overlap on the blind side and as the home defenders covered the wide men flyhalf Tom Hughes spotted the gap and went over wide out, 12- 3.
Then when Walden conceded another penalty the Norwich fly half kicked a fine long range attempt to leave the half time score at 12- 6.
Now with the wind behind them Walden stepped up the pace and proceeded to play a territorial game forcing the home team back deep inside their own half. A fine penalty kick by Hughes on half way line set up a 5 mtre line out and the Walden pack launched an unstoppable driving maul and No 8 Nik Baker was at the tail to dot the ball down as they went over the line. 19 – 6 45mins.
Walden remained on the attack and 5 minutes later a fine move saw winger Ben Stapleton joining the line at pace using his pace and power to take the game beyond Norwich as he went over for the bonus point try 26 -6.
There was then a period of 20 mins that was fairly frustrating as Walden were often penalised sometimes understandably which is something they will need to cut out. Sometimes they were not sure why the penalty was awarded.
Then in the last 10 mins they got their act back together and scored 2 further tries the first was a dynamic backs try as first Mark Kimberly made a break and he found Stapleton in support who went over unopposed and then in the last play of the game after camping on the Norwich try line for a good few minutes prop Stephen Mugridge bulldozed over the line and 'one to watch' Tom Price converted both to leave the final score at 40 – 6.
This was a good game but as mentioned before if Walden are to be even more ruthless they must reduce the penalty count as one day this may come to haunt them in a close fought game.
Next week they travel to Braintree to play the local North Essex derby and all support will be welcomed.
