SWRFC U15's development/friendly fixture for a change...
By Neil Gaffan
A fantastic opportunity to give players lots of game time and try new positions.
A very windy Bury St Edmunds RFC welcomed us for a 13:00 kick off on their 2nd team pitch. After our set warm up the players were ready to go with freshly washed shirts following last weeks muddy affair. Thank you Lynsey for washing them again!
As this match was a development/friendly we were is a fantastic position to be able to give players lots of game time, so we started with a completely mixed team. After the first 20mins or so, it was very clear that Bury had done the same and a very equal and competitive match was being played. Great development for all involved! At half time we were losing by only 7 points, but with a strong wind behind probably should have been slightly ahead.
For the second half we moved a few players around, giving them opportunities to play in different positions, and kept the side as balanced as possible with a strong desire to give players as much time on the field as possible. Ironically we played better into the wind than with it and managed to equal the score in the opening 10 minutes of this half. Another reshuffle of players to give even more opportunities in new positions was extremely well received from the players, and for a few minutes we gained momentum and really started to dominate the game. Bury then made a few changes, strengthening their team and within the final few minutes of the game scored again.
The result absolutely did not matter today. It was all about having fun, player development, game time and team work. The young men all demonstrated the very best core values of the game, self organised, cleaned the changing rooms, sorted the admin and then feasted on sausage and mash in the clubhouse with the Bury lads. Well done all, and thanks to Bury U15's. See you in the Eastern Counties Final....
