Weekend Roundup - 6/7 Dec 25

Matt Salmon8 Dec 2025 - 16:00

Nail biting finish at for the ladies 1's and final games for great club members Caytah Koeberg and Chloe Jones.

WOMEN’S 1s – BLOCKBUSTER DRAMA WITH A 4–3 HOLLYWOOD FINISH
If sport is drama, the Women’s 1s are Shakespeare with shin pads. Their 4–3 victory over Bournemouth was less a match and more a live-action thriller featuring plot twists, yelling, and at least one moment where the universe paused to ask, “surely not again?”

Bournemouth opened the scoring in the first minute. Salisbury were still lacing shoes and adjusting gumshields when the ball was smashed home. Shock registered. Embarrassment simmered. Anger brewed. Then came the transformation.

Aoife Lawrence delivered the equaliser with the confidence of someone absolutely winging it, striking cleanly from the top. Jess Hirst followed from the spot after Nic George was taken out by equal measures of defender and meteorological tragedy. Jo Nash then delivered a breakaway goal, pace and power. Bournemouth, annoyingly resilient, struck back twice from penalty corners to level the match deep into the second half.

At 3–3, nerves frayed. Shouting increased. Time evaporated. And then a short corner on the final play. Inject. Trap. Strike. Becky Ball smashed home the winner as the whistle blew, sparking scenes that should require a licence to broadcast.

Player of the Match: Jo Nash for her great goal and overall performance.

MEN’S 1s – A GUTSY, GROWN-UP 3–3 DRAW AWAY AT CHICHESTER
Where the Ladies 1s leant into chaos, the Men’s 1s embraced grit and structure. Their 3–3 draw away to Chichester was a professional display of resilience after going 2–0 down early to a fast, direct home side.

Salisbury regrouped, tightened the press, and began to control tempo. Oscar Barnes slammed home a drag-flick to halve the deficit before Sam Rogers finished a neat team move at the back post to make it 2–2. The momentum swung, briefly, before Chichester again found a way through. But Salisbury’s penalty corner unit continues to be one of the most lethal in the league, and Garner levelled the match with a technically superb flick into the roof.

The final minutes were played almost entirely in Chichester’s half. Chances came, scrambles happened, but the winner stayed elusive. Still, a point earned away from home and a performance that showed character and structure under pressure.

WOMEN’S 2s – COMPOSED, CALM AND CLINICAL IN A 3–1 WIN
The Women’s 2s produced one of the weekend’s most controlled performances in a smart 3–1 victory at Basingstoke. In a match that could easily have descended into chaos, they kept shape, kept tempo, and kept the scoreboard ticking.

Mariam Mohiddin-Jones struck early, finishing a flowing move. Tabby Farrell added the second with a composed touch past the keeper. Basingstoke tightened after the break, but Salisbury absorbed pressure and then struck late — Mohiddin-Jones again, sealing the game.

The day belonged to Caytah Koeberg, playing her final match before moving back to South Africa, delivering a composed farewell performance that steadied the team throughout.

WOMEN’S 3s – NO SUBS, NO REST, NO LUCK IN A TOUGH 8–0 LOSS
They arrived with eleven players. They faced top-of-the-table Blandford. They battled non-stop for 70 minutes — but the scoreboard didn’t tell the story of the effort.

The 3s’ 8–0 defeat was harsh: long spells of decent play, structured passages, brave defending. Blandford simply capitalised clinically. Jo Halsey was brilliant, covering more turf than most midfields do with a full bench and Lyndz Smith was immense at the back, making tackle after tackle and building attacks. Together, they held the team together through long defensive spells.

A tough day, but plenty of pride.

WOMEN’S 4s – ENERGETIC, POSITIVE, AND BACKED BY OUTSTANDING TEAM PLAY
A superb 3–0 win over Southampton University came courtesy of speed, structure, and some sensational forward work.

Flora Vicentini struck twice — one a sharp rebound from a short corner, the other a composed finish after good build-up play. Victoria Earl added the third with arguably the goal of the weekend: a reverse-stick bullet into the side netting.

Confidence is building rapidly in this side, and so is their ability to control matches for long periods.

WOMEN’S 5s – CALM, PATIENT AND STILL TOP OF THE LEAGUE
Another week, another composed victory for the league leaders. The 5s’ 2–0 win was marked by discipline, smart ball movement, and sharp finishing when chances came.
Jo Bonner opened the scoring with a trademark poacher’s touch, while Tiann Morgner added the second, her form now matching her relentless work rate. Chloe Jones and Lucy Welfare delivered outstanding defensive organisation, keeping things settled when Bournemouth pushed forward late.

This team knows how to win, and more importantly, how to keep winning.

WOMEN’S 6s – IMPROVING FAST AND SHOWING REAL SPIRIT IN 5–1 DEFEAT
The 6s continue to grow each week, even in defeat. Their 5–1 loss to Bournemouth was full of positive spells, transitional play, and increasing confidence from a squad still learning the rhythm of league hockey.

Sofie Harris scored her first goal for the 6’s and Lauren MacQuarrie earned Player of the Match with smart interceptions, brave challenges and composed distribution.
The trajectory is upward, and increasingly obvious.

MEN’S 2s – A HARD-FOUGHT, STRUCTURED 1–1 DRAW
The 2s’ match against Chichester was a classic midfield battle, tight and disciplined. Salisbury took the lead through Bailey Hannaford after a flowing move, before Chichester levelled from a short corner.

Debutant keeper Freddie Matthews impressed with assured handling and calm decision-making. The team pushed for a winner, but the game ended level.

MEN’S 3s – CHARACTER, CHAOS AND A 4–2 WIN FULL OF MOMENTUM SWINGS
The Men’s 3s delivered a match rich with storyline, personality and energy — very on-brand. Their 4–2 win at Weymouth began with early panic (turnovers, panic-clearances, misplaced passes) but quickly turned into attacking fluidity.

Andy Cowling scored first, followed by Steve Robinson’s slick touch under pressure. Josh Cowling added a third in a family double-act moment. Harvey Perkins finished the job with a powerful strike.

The match had everything: moments of precision, moments of chaos, and moments of skill.

MEN’S 4s – BIG EFFORT AGAINST A STRONG LEAGUE LEADER IN 4–0 LOSS
A 4–0 defeat to top-of-the-table Blandford might sound one-sided, but the performance wasn’t. Salisbury battled hard, defended intelligently for long spells, and forced the league leaders to work for every moment.

Graham Dean was outstanding at the back — brave, composed, and decisive — and earned Player of the Match. Solid structure, good communication, and a clear indication of what’s required for the remainder of the season.

STRIDERS – EXPERIENCE, GRIT AND A 2–1 WIN TO STAY TOP
The Striders continue their unbeaten march with a well-managed 2–1 win over Trojans. It was a Striders performance, steady, smart, and won on know-how.

Damian Paterson opened the scoring with a sharp finish and later assisted Matt Bennett for the second. Salisbury controlled tempo and absorbed pressure through clever positional play. Trojans hit back but could not break Salisbury’s structure.

Eleven games unbeaten and top of the league — quietly dominant but the y will be looking forward to the Christmas break after their final game next week.

STROLLERS – BATTLED HARD DESPITE 5–1 DEFEAT
The Strollers’ 5–1 loss to Southampton Cockburns belied a spirited performance. John Lack struck the equaliser after neat interplay, and the side defended well for long stretches before the fitness of the opposition showed late.

Plenty of good connections forming — signs of momentum building.

JUNIORS – ENERGY, SKILL AND A FULL SUNDAY OF ACTIVITY

U8 Mixed
