The group who dreamed up this title were at the time sucking up to certain individual councillors, bringing them along to the clubhouse for a “social jar” somewhere in the mists of time before they all went off and invented another Rugby Club “Ventnor”.

The story at the time was that these “important” gentlemen who sloshed around in the corridors of power and their council money would help us. And they liked the idea of S.S.R.F.C.

We democratically voted. The money didn’t happen, and they all went away but the name stuck.

I think, as I always will, that we are the “HURRICANES.”
