The Passing of Hurricanes Legend: Eamonn Carey

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness I have to pass on to the club the news that Eamonn Carey passed away on Saturday, the 20th of September 2025.

Eamonn was not only a hugely respected coach but also a cherished friend to so many across our rugby community.

Eamonn was a former head coach for Sandown & Shanklin RFC, and also Vectis RFC. He began coaching on the island with Vectis overseeing his sons Ryan and Joel through the age groups and a very successful Colts team, before going the Hurricanes in 2007 until early 2017, and managing the club through its most successful period on the field for the Hurricanes.

He then had spells of guest coaching for the Wight Wolves, Vectis and occasionally for Isle of Wight RFC. When it came to rugby, his passion for the game was irrepressible, with all the wit, character and flair you’d expect from someone who treated his players as his extended family.

On Saturday afternoon, unfortunately he lost his battle with cancer, passing away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.

Our thoughts at this heartbreaking time are very much with Eamonn’s beloved wife, children, and his wider family. Their loss is immeasurable, and we hope they can take some comfort from knowing how deeply Eamonn was admired, respected, and loved by all who had the privilege to know him.

Eamonn’s passing leaves a great void in our club and in our community, but his legacy will live on in the countless players, teams, and friends he inspired along the way.

May he rest in peace.

I will notify you all of any funeral arrangements as soon as I am aware.
