Report from Graham Thomas:

Sandown travelled to the Thames Ditton based opposition hoping to end a 4 match loosing start to the league season. The first play of the game though set the tone of the game as Woolfenden received the KO and clashed heads with his opposite number leaving the field with a gashed head. Replacement Jones came on to the back row and Sam Rees moved into second row.

Old Paulines started the brighter and made clear their intent to run the ball wide when ever possible but Sandown defended well and with the lineout operating well were able to take clean at line out drive up field before Chandler drove at the midfield and from the ruck Paulines came in at the side conceding a penalty that Buckingham converted. 3 nil Sandown.

From the restart Hurricanes drove up field with Booth in control of the forwards and Joe Rees, Eldridge and Tolley driving as one group. Sandown kept the ball tight with centres Chandler and Robinson cutting back to the forwards with Hunter, Pacey driving to the line but being held up at the 7th and 8th phases of play.

From the scrum the ball broke for Paulines and a clearance down field was returned by Baxandall handing off the big opposition centre before setting the forwards to drive through a number of phases before moving wide to Gough who was stopped short of the line.

From the line-out Paulines cleared deep into the Sandown half and against the play a break in midfield set the opposition up and from the ruck a move to the left resulted in a drive held up over the Sandown Line. From the scrum a move to the right and the second phase off the ruck ended in a try converted to give Paulines a 7 to 3 lead.

The remaining 10 minutes of the half Sandown defended non stop but were unable to break out to launch an effective counter attack the score remaining unchanged.

After the break Old Paulines had the best of the early exchanges stretching the back three of Tyson, Gough and Baxandall and after some problems at the scrum the Sandown pack lost a ball breaking free to give Paulines several phases of play before a score from a simple passing move. The try converted, Hurries now 14 3 behind bought on Harris for Pacey and gave a platform for the half backs Booth and Buckinham to clear from defence while Gough was proving illusive to the Paulines defence.

A deserved try now by the drive to the line by the pack allowed Sandown's Luke Chandler to close the gap to 14 to 8. Within minutes another attacking position saw the keen Booth take a tap penalty in front of the posts only for Sandown to be denied, On the counter again breaking mid field through loose play Old Paulines went the full length to score now leading 21 to 8.

Sandown now within the last minutes threw all they could and with the last play of the game were awarded a penalty try converted by Buckingham to gain the vital loosing bonus point. The first win still evades Hurricanes and thie week they meet joint bottom Old Wellingtonianes.
