Report from Graham Thomas:

Sandown travelled to the rearranged fixture with top of the table Winchester following the white out of all matches earlier in January.

With the elements against in the first half, Hurries found the going tough and with Ryan Carey and Andy Gough needed as line out jumpers the cross field cover proved less effective. The talented Winchester fly half ran the game and set up numerous assaults on the Sandown backs line with VIKOMA man-of-the-match Luke Chandler and Baxandall solid in the centre but over laps allowing two scores in 20 minutes for the home team to lead 14 nil.

Out of defence Tom Monk and the ball hungry Dan Robinson made good breaks while at scrums, honours were even with front row WIGHTLINK man-of-the-match Todd Eldridge, Ben Kulik and Chris Skelly challenging their opposite number strongly.

Before half time the luckless Heelan slipped and injured his back to be replaced by Chris Perfect improving with every chance he gets. The half ended with Sandown under concerted pressure and a final try to Winchester gave them a 21 nil lead at the break.

Second half saw Ricky Harris on for Skelley and Gavin Bodrell on for Joel Carey and the significant wind and slop advantage now with the Hurricanes. Sandown settled better in to the game and wings seeing more of the ball.

From a break by the snipping Baxandall supported by Robinson, Winchester were draw off side and Tom Monks converted the penalty 21 to 3. The remainder of the match had a familiar pattern with Hurries using the kick and chase in the strong wind while Winchester used the half back advantage to drive up field scoring a try on the hour and a late penalty to lead 31 to 3.

Injuries to David Woolfenden and Ricky Harris bought back Skelly and Joel Carey and a team yellow to the unlucky Ryan Carey kept the squad busy to the end. Better forward drives at close quarters in the second half, directed by Michael Booth at 9, gave hope for future games and with the top team now out of the way Hurricanes can concentrate on the run in to the end of the season and survival in the London leagues.

TEAM: Todd Eldridge, Ben Kulik, Chris Skelley, Dave Woolfenden, Nick Heelan, Ryan Carey, Andrew Gough, Tom Pacy, Michael Booth, Joel Carey, David Graham, Luke Chandler (capt), Will Baxandall, Dan Robinson, Tom Monks, Ricky Harris, Chris Perfect, Gavin Bodrell.
