Report from: Lawrence Edmonston

Sandown embarked on the long trip to Purley determined to get their season on track, the selection committee worked hard all week to get as strong a side as possible and the squad didn’t disappoint on the day with a hard working encouraging performance.

The first half started superbly for the visitors as they pinned Purley in their own half for the first ten minutes, Sandown got the first score when skipper Chandler and Dave Graham combined to release Josh Wetherick into a gap, he didn’t disappoint and touched down, Edmonston added the extras to put a jubilant Sandown side 7-0 up. They pressed again with youngster Luke Gales and wing Zac Chiverton both going close. The home side got in to their rhythm and just before half time they scored a well worked try. Half time 7-5 to the Hurries.

The second half started poorly for the visitors when they failed to gather the restart and strong forward play from Purley allowed them to score in the corner. Sandown immediately got back at the home side and with Luke Hunter, Chris Perfect and Sam Flux carrying well, Sandown worked their way towards the home posts. Purley infringed to allow Lawrence Edmonston to convert a penalty.

On a number of occasions in the second half Sandown and Shanklin pushed hard, their forwards led by the superb Sam Rees took the ball to their opposition on a number of occasions but they just failed to capitalise. Purley made changes and these changes had an effect as they forged ahead to 34-10 but Sandown never gave up and they went close on a number of occasions from VIKOMA man of the match Luke Gales on his full debut and also from the hard working front row of Henry Bagnall, Adam Tyas and the ever green Dave Steele.

With five minutes to go Sandown finally started to get on top of the scrum and when the referee awarded a penalty Edmonston went quickly and fed skipper Luke Chandler, he spotted a couple of forwards in the back line and chipped over, gathered the ball and raced away to touch down, Edmonston converted to make the final score 34-17 to the home side.
