Report by Lawrence Edmonston

On a beautiful day for rugby the Hurries entertained Petersfield at the Fairway. Sandown fielded a strong side against a young mobile but lacking in numbers travelling side.

The game started poorly for the Hurries as they conceded a converted try within five minutes of the start. Petersfield were unlucky on another couple of occasions and were pushing hard when Alex Hiscocks intercepted the ball in Sandown's 22 and sprinted away to score under the posts.

This spurred the home side on and they scored further first half tries from Greg Dean who crashed over from short range and when Simon Maine made a superb break through the middle Nick Heelan was on hand to take the ball and touch down. The final score of the half came when the forwards took the ball through a couple of phases and young second row Chris Perfect darted over from ten metres.

The second half was more of the same with further tries from WIGHTLINK man-of-the-match Dave Steele (2), both scores were superb individual efforts from the veteran prop, then after good work from the centre pairing of Michael Cooper and Al Morey, Josh Wetherick touched down.

Then BJ MEATS man-of-the-match Simon Maine took the ball from Ross Edmunds and raced away to score. The final try came from Tom Monks who picked the ball up in broken play and showed blistering pace as he went over untouched from thirty metres. Monks also had his kicking boots on as he scored a penalty and five conversions.

A good win for the Hurries leaving them third in Merit 1 with three games remaining.
