Report from: Lawrence Edmonston

On what proved to be a tough day out, Sandown's 2nd XV put in an excellent away performance against a strong Eastleigh side. On a cold windy day the Hurries attacked with the elements for the first half and camped themselves in their opponents half. The first incident of the game saw number 8 Greg Dean and John Miscleback competing for the ball, but the aftermath of this was that Dean spent his customary ten minutes in the sin bin after the rather officious referee took exception to the incident.

The first score came as the impressive James Flux chased a kick ahead to touch down, Lawrence Edmonston converting; Edmonston then converted a close range penalty. The travelling side spent a lot of the game in the Eastleigh half and went close through Greg Dean, Joe Pettifer and father and son partnership John and Matt Miscleback but the home side always looked dangerous in an even first half. Sandown scored further points from the strong running Dan Robinson. Half time 15-12 to Sandown.

The second half was again an even affair with the home side just shading it, scoring two converted tries with James Flux again scoring for the visitors. Sandown always looked dangerous and when the forwards could secure good ball into the backs, Tom Monks released centres Robinson and Flux time and time again to threaten the home line.

There was one scare for Sandown as they rather unluckily lost Tom Monks to a ten minutes sin bin but they managed to survive this period successfully. The rest of the second half was an even, tense affair and it sprung to life in the last ten minutes with the scores at 26-22 as both sides went for the win.

The Hurries were behind until the last few minutes but when they got a penalty on the half way line Edmonston fed Tom Monks and he broke away and popped the ball to BIG JOHN man-of-the-match James Flux, who was caught a metre short of the Eastleigh line but good play from David Greenough and Adam Tyas allowed Sandown to recycle the ball and when Monks again put Dan Robinson in to space he raced through the covering defence to touch down and, with Edmonston converting, this gave Sandown a three point advantage with the re-start to come.

There was still drama to come as the referee surprised everyone and awarded Eastleigh with a penalty to restart the game apparently due to a wayward comment from the Sandown side. They safely managed the penalty and celebrated as the referee blew the final whistle. A superb away win and the first double of the season.
