Hurricanes Pick up First Victory of the Season

Hurricanes Pick up First Victory of the Season

SSRFC Webmaster3 Nov 2025 - 16:44

The second team travelled to Chichester for a rearranged fixture in what was to be a highly anticipated clash.

Both teams had borrowed players from their higher level squads to bolster their side so it looked to be a great game of rugby. The game began with both sides not wanting to give an inch to their opponent, both putting pressure on their oppositions attacks forcing errors leading to scrums.

Although Chichester had the more experienced pack it was the Hurricanes that began to gain the edge in the scrums putting their opponents under pressure. This was the same in the lineouts with Rhys Mundell causing a nuisance on the Chichester throw. The Hurricanes were beginning to find a foothold in the game with some strong runs from Hooker Jack Davey and Number 8 George Shannon, the visitors finally breaking the deadlock after 25 minutes of rugby with some slick back play through the hands finding winger, Michael Barrett to crash over the line. Zak Chiverton converted, 0 - 7.

The Hurricanes had a let off just after scoring as Chichester crossed the line but wanted to get under the posts a Chichester player tired to step some hurricanes players and was tackled over the dead ball line. The score, luckily, remained 0 - 7. Towards the end of the first half the Hurricanes crept their way back up the field with some strong running from full back, Harry Thomas and some good kicking from the ever present fly-half, Gary Warvill. The hurries ramped up the pressure forcing Chichester to concede a penalty in the front of the posts with the clock in the red, Captain Nathan Proud decided to take the shot at goal with Chiverton obliging and extending the lead to 0-10 at half-time.

With a half time pep talk at half time from coach Keith Wallace the Hurricanes came out flying in the second half, with Ant Burr making several line breaks and away debutant Keegan Boudier shutting down and Chichester attacker that ran towards him with some crunching tackles. The away side really started to gain a foothold in the game with some slick backs play, through the hands of Warvill, Chiverton, Burr and the ever dependable Will Hatch realising Thomas for 2 tries in the space of 10 minutes, Chiverton converting one, the score now 0-22.

The hurricanes pack went from strength to strength with debutant Ricky Keyes and the experience of Adam Tyas piling pressure on the oppositions props. Stand in flanker, Chris Ormerod, warming to his new position made himself known around the field with tackles and carries the Hurries were well and truly on the front foot. It wasn’t long before Shannon crashed over the line ever extending the lead with Chiverton converting once again, 0 - 27.

With a healthy lead the Hurries ringed the changes with Barrett and Burr taking a breather, making way for 2nd XV captain Jamie Dilk and bebutant, Tom Mills. This didn’t weaken the side though, Mills catching the ball on the wing and putting a kick through forcing Chichester to a goal line drop out. Dilk also made an impact with some great tackles on his wing stopping the onrushing Chichester hooker.

Chichester finally scored a consolation try 10 minutes from the end, despite great defence from second row pairing, Jack Winter and Jordan Langdon, 7-27. However, the away side weren’t done just yet, the home teams try only adding fuel to the fire, they went straight back on the attack and piled the pressure on the home side with attack after attack finally resulting in a last minute try which the Hurricanes pack marched their counterparts back with Shannon picking from the base for his second try, Chiverton again converted. Final Score 7-34, the hurricanes taking a bonus point victory back the the island.

"The boys all stuck to the tasks they were given before the game and their class shone through with a dominant performance. A special shoutout to full debutants Ricky Keyes and Tom Mills fitting into the team seamlessly and Keegan Boudier on his away debut, showing the training has been paying off. We look forward to Welcoming Fareham Heathens next week".

Next weekend (8th November) the 2nd XV welcome Fareham Heathens to the Fairway Ground, kick-off scheduled for 14.00, Clubhouse bar open from 13.00.
