Report from Lawrence Edmonston

A strong Sandown 2nds travelled to Petersfield on Saturday and put in a good away performance to leave with all the points.

On a big pitch in superb conditions, the Hurries started brightly and after initial pressure from the home side they started to get in to their game plan, pushing Petersfield back with strong runs from the forwards, setting up good ball from the backs.

The first two tries came from first Michael Barrett who followed a superb break created by Dean Gasper and the returning Michael Cooper who fed wing Sam Ayres. He raced away and was tackled just short of the line where he popped the ball up to the youngster to touch down.

The second score was much the same with Tom Borrer setting up Ayres again and this time there was no catching the winger as he raced away to touch down.

Further first half tries came from BJ MEATS man-of-the-match Adam Tyas after good work from a line out Chris Perfect, Joe Wiltshire and Nick Heelan combined to release the hooker to score,

Michael Barrett scored his second of the game and from a quick penalty skipper Lawrence Edmonston completed the first half scoring for the Hurries.

Petersfield were always in touch as they scored three tries themselves in the first period and were only denied another one after a length of the field break away, that was thwarted by a superb covering tackle from young fly half Gavin Boddrell. Half time 27-19 to the travelling Hurries side.

Petersfield came out hard in the second period and despite sensible tactical play from the Hurries they scored a try bringing the score to 27-24 with twenty minutes remaining.

The Hurries worked their way towards the home line and from a well won line out orchestrated by Greg Dean and the impressive WIGHTLINK man-of-the-match Ben Kullick, Edmonston released the backs and Bodrell found the rampaging Dean Gasper who ran a superb line to touch down under the posts.

With the score at 34-24 and fifteen minutes to go, Petersfield pressed hard but resolute defence from the Hurries close to their own line held them out until the last play of the game as a Petersfield forward crashed over after good work from their pack.
