Sandown & Shanklin RFC's 2nd only fixture this month was an away trip to Alton, following the cancellation of Fawley RFC 2nd XV the week before, and no fixture planned next week due to the cup competitions.
The Hurricanes arrived to Alton with only nine players but ready to play a game, despite the blowy conditions. Yet, the was sun peeking through the clouds on a chilly Saturday afternoon, to provide decent conditions. The game began 10 vs 11, with Alton kindly loaning a player to the visitors. The first try of the afternoon was trudged over by Veteran lock Peter Swallow and extras added by second team debutante for the season Charles Little, who was playing between fly-half and fullback for the game. This early try set the tone for the game, a few more tries rolled in with Henry Bagnall, working his way back to full fitness, scored after a cracking turnover at the breakdown. Captain Liam Little bundled over from 5 yards and Harrison Fyffe bagged a well earned try and some great team work. Later in the first half Man of the Match Dan Sayers scored the first of his six tries of the day. Breaking through the first tackles and going the distance from the half way line. Just before half time Alton scored a well worked consolation try. A move that took 14 phases to then get over the whitewash. The remaining five of Sayers’ six tries were scored in second half, keeping the scoreboard ticking over for the Hurricanes. The final nail in the coffin was hammered home by Charles Little, who scooped up the bobbling kick off from Alton and sprinted down the touch line. Little then rounded the opposition full back and touched down under the posts to take the score to 7 - 67.
After starting the game with ten, nine proud Hurricanes finished the game with an excellent effort from all and a great achievement and endeavour from both teams to ensure the game was played. Sadly there is no 2nd XV fixture until the 1st December. However, the inaugural Friday Night Lights session, on Friday 23rd November, will provide a game for everyone and anyone in a week with no fixture.
