A much changed Hurries squad travelled to Totts on Saturday looking to keep their good start to the season going.
The first half was a pretty even contest with the Hurries opening the scoring with a penalty from Lawrence Edmonston after good work from the superb back row pairing of WIGHTLINK man-of-the-match Arthur Buxton and BJ MEATS man-of-the-match Shaun Williams driving in to the heart of the Totts defence and eventually drawing a penalty for hands in the ruck. Totts battled back and scored two well worked tries before Sandown scored their only try of the game from the back of a close range scrum, when the returning Greg Dean picked up and crashed over to score. Half time 10-8 to the home side.
The second half started superbly for the away side as a change of tactics saw fly half Damian Marriot constantly pinning the homes side back with intelligent kicking. The Hurries pinned Totts in their own half and were awarded a number of penalties in the Totts 22, the last one saw a Totts player go down with a serious injury that required an ambulance to attend. This injury stopped the game for about forty minutes and involved a change of pitches.
When the game finally restarted Hurries pressured hard and came away with another Edmonston penalty. Totts made some changes and for the remaining twenty minutes they pressured the Hurries line. Superb defence from the Hurries in particular the hard worked back line of Tom Borrer, Steve Johnson, Sam Kullick, Martin Keyworth and Ben Barlow who were all working over time. Totts ran in a converted try and a penalty to see the game out 20-11.
Sandown, with a much changed side, can be proud of their efforts on the day and with their large squad look forward to a good season.
