Sandown & Shanklin RFC 2nd XV defeated away to Chineham RFC

Sandown & Shanklin RFC 2nd XV travelled away to a strong Chineham RFC, with a match day squad of twenty players. Although great numbers, the team was forward-heavy and had to play a number of forwards in the backline. This of course had a knock on to the cohesion of the back line. The game, as expected, was a battle. The hosts playing down the hill in the first half made the most of their pitch and took a 20 - 0 lead into the half time interval. However, the scoreline didn't reflect the effort of the Tornadoes, especially with heroic try-line defence at times.

The second half was a fresh start with huge carries from the likes of Wayne Williams, Jim Excell, and Lewis Gough, producing valuable gains. However, handling errors and good defence by the hosts kept the visitors at bay. Eventually, the Tornadoes scored their first try, following a period of sustained pressure, when WightFibre Man of the Match Luke Orton, crashed through five defenders and with the help of Charlie Dilk, dotted down to make it 20 - 5.
Moments later, a quick tap and go saw Chineham score with their only real attack of the second half which was converted. This didn't dampen the Tornadoes enthusiasm however and played hard until the final whistle. As the Chineham flanker attempted to kick the ball out to end the game, the outstanding-all-match, Liam Little, chased hard and managed to dot the loose ball down, just before the ball was about to roll over the dead-ball line. Just rewards for the never say die attitude of the team. Final score 27 - 10.

This week the Tornadoes are at home, hosting Andover RFC 2nd XV at the Fairway Ground.
