Report by Lawrence Edmonston

Sandown came out on top in this hastily re-arranged league game bouncing back from the defeat the previous week from local rivals Ryde. Sandown's management team of Richard Bartlett and Simon Swallow turned out a relatively inexperienced side topped up with a few more seasoned members of the club.

All credit must also go to a hard working Basingstoke side who travelled with only 13 players and were grateful for the loan of a couple of Hurries players, looking back lending them the superb youngster Michael Booth was probably a mistake on the part of the management team.

The game started well for the Hurries as they ran in tries from John Ring, Tom Borrer, Harrison Booth, Ben Barlow and the returning Luke Chandler. Sandown forwards got on top with Les Berry, makeshift hooker McLaughlin and the experienced Steve Perfect dictating the set plays. This allowed scrum half James Luckman to supply good ball for the backs to run riot.

Captain George Marrinelli leading from the front took countless balls and made good ground and from one such move youngster and SPA SYSTEMS man-of-the-match Paddy Doran touched down.

The second half saw more of the same but the home side made a few mistakes and allowed Basingstoke to kick two early penalties. Second half scorers for the Huuries were Paddy Doran again and WIGHTLINK man-of-the-match youngster Tom Borer.

A good result for the home side in this their first season in league rugby. So far the season has been a bit up and down due to player availability. With the last few months of the season left it is hoped that the management team of Bartlett and the rather elusive 3rd team skipper Steve Crookes will be able to pull together a few more players to regularly fulfil the remaining fixtures.
