Match report

This week saw a break from league action as we took on higher league opposition in the Nene Cup.

The starting line up saw the return of key centre back Hales and that was to show pivitol as the game went on.

The game started off quickly with Rectory United really taking the game to Sands United in the opening 10 minutes. A slick passing move across their attack as the moved the ball from right to left and their striker made no mistake with a finish in to the right hand side. A few minutes later they were through again but denied by Barker this time. That proved to be a turning point in the game as both the attack and defence grew in stature.

Every time Rectory attacked they were stopped by our giants of centre backs, seriously you would be forgiven if you thought you had landed in Lilliput they make the opposition look that small.  Whilst the attack looked dangerous every time we went forward.

About the half hour mark Best fed Rob 'goal a game' Allen whose shot was too hot for their keeper to handle and in it went. 1-1

Before the end of the half a goal line clearance by Blake ensured we went in level at half time

Second half kicked off and again the high intensity remained. The defence startin strongly winning plenty of balls in the air.

But it was Rectory who dealt the first blow as a long ball went down the left hand side Barker ran to claim it but finished second in the foot race and the ball was deftly lobbed over the top in to the new.

It wasnt long before the Sands men found an equaliser a goal mouth scramble eventually fell to Hiliker who found Gavin who made no mistake from close range.

The game continued at a good pace with T.Littlemore and Britten coming close to finding the net,
The next 8 minutes of the game proved to be decisvive as rectory scored the third with another screamer in to the top left of the sands goal. We then lost Hales who had been a strong presence all game to injury and 2 minutes later Rectory took advantage of the change in defence and finished a sweeping move from a cross.

However as is the Sands way we never give up and we really tried to take something from the game, creating a few more half chances before a quick throw by Gavin found T.Littlemore who found Best who duly dispatched. 4-3 but only 4 minutes remained and as we huffed and puffed we could not get the equaliser we deserved.

a game well done we hold our heads high for a performance against higher league opposition.
