A lively encounter at The Oldham Academy North saw Santos U12s fight back from being a goal down at half time to run out comfortable victors in an often fiery encounter that nevertheless featured some excellent football.

The opening exchanges were dominated by Santos, who missed the opportunity to take an early lead when Mossley's goalkeeper did well to keep out Isaac Carroll's well placed spot kick.

Carroll and Jackson then combined well down the right to force a good save from Mossley's keeper, before Mossley missed a good chance to take the lead themselves when firing wide when clean through midway through the first half. Moments later, the referee went to ground under an innocuous looking challenge from nobody.

More Santos pressure saw a sweeping move down the right result in another fine save from Mossley's No 1, after which Mossley soon took the lead, the ball being turned in from close range following a scramble in the Santos area.

Santos No 11 Luke Farrand was forced to leave the field minutes before half time after being the victim of a horrific waist high challenge when bursting from midfield.

After regrouping at half time and being encouraged to move the ball more quickly, Santos seized the initiative immediately from the restart, Finnegan, Carroll and Whatmough combining well down the left before an angled drive from Whatmough was pushed away for a corner by Mossley's impressive keeper.

The pressure eventually told 6 minutes into the 2nd half when an excellent ball in from the right from Pickup was rifled into the far corner via a superbly controlled right footed drive by Kieran Finnegan. 1-1.

Mossley then regained the lead against the run of play through a smart finish from a tight angle, Santos hitting back almost immediately, a deft Whatmough lofted finish capping a fine passing move initiated by Ashley Cata playing the ball from the heart of defence, to Carroll, who then split the Mossley defence with a pin point through ball.

2-2 became 3-2 shortly after, as nimble footwork from Jackson enabled him to wriggle free from his markers, before turning and firing a low drive across the keeper into the far left bottom corner.

An important save from Santos No 1 Joel Pratt from a deflected Mossley free kick helped Santos maintain their lead, which was doubled soon after when Luke Farrand surged into the Mossley box from wide right to get across the defender and convert a superb left footed delivery from the left from Carroll.

Kieran Finnegan put the result beyond doubt midway through the 2nd half, after stabbing home a loose ball in the box, a strike which broke Mossley's resolve as well as the goal posts, which had to be re-assembled.

The icing on the cake was applied in the last minute when Matthew Dunkerley pounced on a loose ball in the area, following a waved away penalty appeal for a foul on the flying Ashley, before cooly chesting the ball down and dispatching a venomous right footed volley into the bottom left corner past the helpless Mossley goalkeeper. It must be said that the finish was of a quality way beyond what may have been expected from the Santos defensive stalwart, playing in an unfamiliar attacking role. The ensuing celebrations involved dabs galore.
