Santos U13s made an early exit from the league cup after coming up against a pacy and hungry Reddish North End Yellows outfit.
The departure of Finn Whatmough and illness to Rafael Correia meant that Santos were down to the bare bones for this game, with no substitutes to call upon. A bumpy grass pitch also made this an awkward assignment and Santos were on the back foot right from the start, as the hosts showed more desire to win the ball.
The Yellows used possession to release their speedy wide players at every opportunity and they quickly raced into a 2-0 lead, aided and abetted by some lacklustre tackling. Santos’s quickest defender, Adam Shallcross, helped to thwart some of the danger and goalkeeper Sebastian Toms rushed out to make a fine one-on-one stop, but some confident passing and finishing saw the deficit extend to 4-0 by half-time.
After the break, the Yellows continued to focus their attacks down the flanks and they added two further goals (albeit one looked suspiciously offside) to go 6-0 ahead. Other than Hayden Wood’s bursts from centre midfield, Santos had struggled to create anything of note going forward until fellow midfielders Joe Bamford, James Pitts and Samee Rashid started to grow in influence.
Rashid went close after robbing the full-back of the ball but then he did help Santos to register a consolation goal when his cross was flicked in by Oak Champarath. Moments later, Lucas Ward had the ball in the net but the referee ruled it out for offside.
At the other end, the Shallcross brothers, Connah Brown and Harrison Crowther all stuck to their difficult tasks and Toms made a couple of good saves, but it was the Yellows who had the last word with their seventh goal.
