Weekly round-up 8th / 9th September

By David Brown

1’s and 2’s washed out on Saturday, with the 1's securing their top fight status and Sunday’s take a big step towards promotion from division two.

September dates for your diary.

Friday 14th September- 7:00- Junior presentation up at the club for All Stars, Under 9’s and Under 13’s.

Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th September- final weekend of the season.

Tuesday 18th/ Wednesday 19th September. Ground works going on at the club.

Depending on the weather and when we can get the square scarified, then we’ll be looking to re-seed the square on either Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. This will ensure that we have a fit set of wickets to play on come April 2019. We are also looking at taking the sightscreens down as well. All this, of course takes many hands and with the light fading quicker by the day, we will not have a lot of time to get these essential bits of post-season work. If you are free on either Tuesday or Wednesday of next week (even if it is for 30 minutes or so) can you please come up to the club from around 5:30 onwards. More details will be posted on Whatsapp early next week. The more hands the merrier.

Friday 28th September – 7:30 start. End of season presentation will be held at the club.

1XI and 2XI

For the first time this season, both our first and second teams were denied by the early September rain, with both games being abandoned without a ball being bowled. Silver lining was that the vast majority of the Premier 1XI games were also abandoned meaning that our first team have secured top-flight status for the 2019 season.

Sunday side

Another 20 points for the Sunday first team who, with the win moved level on points with second placed Sowerby Bridge to take the promotion race into the final week of the season.

On what has to be said was a rotten September day, our lads stuck to their task manfully to record a narrow but crucial 13 run win in our pursuit of promotion from the Sunday section second division.

We batted first on a difficult track and posted 197 for 9. Around half of those runs came from our young opening pair of Rishav and Rhys who put on 92 for the first wicket, with Rhys carrying on his wonderful season with the bat in making another half-century. Rishav made a nice 29 but both fell with the score on 92 and Veitchy departed some four runs later to leave us on 96 for 3. Useful scores in the teens from Brocky, Dylan and Robbo helped the score along, but the innings was given a real middle order boost with 38 from Matty Keast. He was out in the 37th over having pushed the score along to 182. Dave Grundy, Leo, Booey and Isaac then added another 15 runs between them to leave our hosts for the day chasing a shade under 200 to win in a game that was reduced to 39 overs a side.

And it proved to be just enough as the wickets were shared around as we sealed a 14 run win. Keasty got rid of both openers to leave them at 17 for 2 and he had another some eleven runs later and despite some late order ‘tap’ still recorded decent figures of 3 for 62 off his nine overs. Isaac bowled well with little luck but did manage the two wickets for 30 runs in his 8.5 overs and he finished the game off by having their number 11 caught by Rishav. At 86 for 6 (Rishav and the skipper in on the act) we were well on top, but then successive partnerships of 45 and 35 put the game back in the balance. Booey got their number 7 out thanks to a M Veitch snaffle and Veitchy then came and bamboozled their numbers 9 and 10 to leave them on 173 for 9, before Isaac finished the game off.

A tight run thing but another maximum point haul.
