Scunthorpe RUFC 2nds welcomed Cleckheaton 2nds for their first game of 2019 after having previously beaten Cleckheaton earlier in the season.
The game started in a frantic manner with Cleckheaton fighting their way out of their half and threatening the Scunthorpe 22, after a kick out of defence by Scunthorpe, Cleckheaton gifted Tim Dunk an interception to score the first try of the day which was converted by Jake Goodison. Scunthorpe were ruthless in attack and resolute in defence, there was no respite for Cleckheaton with Matthew Mason, Matthew Field scoring twice, Jack Brunt, Oliver Fielding all scoring tries and Goodison converting all but. The first half saw Scunthorpe having a healthy 45 – 0 lead . Play was halted for a period of time towards the end of the first half after a couple of players inadvertently knocked photographer Marie Robertson to the ground. Marie received excellent care from the Cleckheaton physio and other spectators and the team would like to wish Marie a quick and speedy recovery and express their thanks to the Cleckheaton physio.
Changes were made at half time to the Scunthorpe team but any hopes that the game would get any easier for Cleckheaton were dashed very quickly with Tim Dunk scoring his second of the game within minutes of the restart. A further 5 tries were scored with Brunt and Harrison both getting their second of the game and Colin Chapman, Jack Rowbotham, and Josh Sarsfield scoring. Goodison converting 4 and Harrison one.
