Scunthorpe Stags win top of the table clash

Brave defending wins the day

Scunthorpe RUFC 2nds v Sandal RUFC 2nds 09/02/2019

Scunthorpe RUFC 2 nds welcomed Sandal RUFC 2nds to Helsam Park in what was a top of the table clash.
Scunthorpe started the game well with the forwards making their way out of their half with numerous pick and go’s. Fly Half Jake Goodison spotted winger Billy Hardy in space and deftly placed a cross field kick to allow Hardy to catch it at pace, Hardy then passed the ball to the supporting Matty Field who made his way over the line to score the first try of the game, Goodison kicking the extra points. Sandal showed that they had pace on both wings and very nearly scored with only a try saving tackle by a trio of Scunthorpe players within metres of the try line stopping the attack. Sandal continued to attack and were rewarded with a try following a scrum where they switched the play from one side of the pitch to the other. In what was a game when each side had periods of supremacy Sandal scored their second of the day again from a scrum where the ball was quickly made available and passed to their centre who burst through tacklers to score, the try was converted to give Sandal the lead 7 -12. With 10 minutes to go to half time Scunthorpe made there up the pitch and following a lineout after a penalty Scunthorpe drove the Sandal pack backwards leaving Clarke Murray to muscle his way over the line, Goddison was unable to add the extra points. The halftime whistle came with the score level at 12-12.
Scunthorpe now had the wind to their backs and from their kick indecision by a Sandal player caused him to knock on. From the ensuing scrum the Scunthorpe pack drove Sandal backwards at pace with Number 8 Simon Fisher just managing to control the ball, he crossed the line with the ball still at his feet and Will Harrison dove in to touch the ball down. Sandal made further mistakes and allowed Scunthorpe a 5 metre lineout which they cleanly caught and drove over to give Max Humphries his first try in his first game of the year. Scunthorpe were once again in the lead at 22 -12 but Sandal showed why they are second in the league and scored a good try to bring them back into the game at 22 -19. Goodison used all his experience and continued to use the wind to continually push Sandal back into their half. It was Scunthorpe’s turn to exert pressure and Harrison picked up his second of the day – although the referee awarded it as a penalty try following an offence earlier in the attack. Sandal continued to use their large pacey backs but the Scunthorpe defence held firm with the Scunthorpe backs in particular Mick Dunk and Hardy putting in excellent tackles to prevent certain tries. The game was still being played at pace and Fisher was given the ball in space and scored close to the posts, Goodison converting. Harrison soon scored again giving Scunthorpe a comfortable lead. Sandal did not stop attacking and after good interplay between players they scored what was to be the last try of the game giving the score Scunthorpe 43 Sandal 24.
It was a great team performance by Scunthorpe and though the backs only got on the score board once their efforts in defence gave Scunthorpe the victory.
