Scunthorpe Stags maintain winning ways

Scunthorpe RUFC Stags faced local rivals Hull Ionians 2nds knowing a win was essential if Scunthorpe wanted to remain top of the table as Hull Ionians were sitting in 3rd position in the table with games in hand.
A minutes silence was held to remember Carl Meyer who tragically recently passed away, Carl had been a mini/Junior official and was always to be found supporting the team, his son Lewis is in the squad and also coaches in the mini/junior section.
The game started and it became immediately obvious that Scunthorpe wanted to dominate their opposition, from the Scunthorpe kick off Hull Ionians knocked the ball on and from the resultant scrum Scunthorpe were awarded a penalty which Jake Goodison calmly stepped up to grab the first points of the match. It wasn’t long before Scunthorpe were awarded another penalty and Goodison was again successful. Both teams had phases of possession but couldn’t break through the opposition defence. The Scunthorpe forwards began to work their way up the field and finally released centre Tim Dunk who made good progress and found the supporting Matthew Field who broke through the defence to score the first of the day, Goodison adding the extra. Scunthorpe were 13 – 0 up after 20 minutes. Hull Ionians attacked with ferocity but were halted by great Scunthorpe defence in particularly from George Mason and Mick Coult, but Scunthorpe were giving numerous penalties away at the break down and the referee gave one final warning to captain Kane Linklater. With 10 minutes to go to half time Scunthorpe were deemed to have again transgressed at the breakdown and the unfortunate Coult was shown the yellow card. Down to 14 men Scunthorpe still managed to defend, with Goodison putting fine clearance kicks in. After one such clearance kick the Hull Ionians defender was slightly late in the tackle and with Goodison showing his displeasure in a physical way gave the referee no option but to issue another yellow card. Scunthorpe were now really under the cosh and were having to defend their try line with only 13 men, Scunthorpe were in no mood to capitulate and man for man stopped every Hull Ionians attack and with a sense of relief the first half ended with the score still at Scunthorpe 13 Hull Ionians 0.
Both teams started the second half well but Hull Ionians showing good patience in attack and their speedy backs cut through the Scunthorpe defence to score their first try which was not converted, bringing them within 8 points of Scunthorpe. The Scunthorpe scrum began to show its dominance and at once such scrum Nu 8 Simon Fisher picked the ball up from the base, handed off a couple of players and passed the ball out of a tackle to Will Harrison who then found the on rushing Liam Brunt who with excellent foot work evaded the defenders to score, with Goodison still off the pitch Harrison stepped up to take the conversion but narrowly missed. Hull Ionians advanced again on the Scunthorpe try line and were rewarded with a line out deep in Scunthorpe’s 22 but David Ward leaped high to snatch the ball and got the ball to Jack Brunt who broke through the initial defenders and galloped a full 80 yards to score near the posts, Goodison now back on the field slotted the conversion giving Scunthorpe a healthy 25 – 5 lead. The game became niggly with the referee giving numerous penalties to both teams but mainly to Scunthorpe and after a succession of penalties prop Clarke Murray was shown the yellow card. Hull Ionians hammered at the Scunthorpe try line but their defence held until after a couple of missed tackles Hull Ionians managed to score the final score of the game to give Scunthorpe victory with a score line of Scunthorpe 25 Hull Ionians 10
