Stags maintain winning ways

Scunthorpe RUFC 2nds made the short trip across the Humber bridge to face Hull Ionians on Saturday 23/03.
Hull kicked off but the ball didn’t go the 10 metres required, at the resultant scrum the Scunthorpe pack ensured that the ball was retained and scrum half Tim Dunk fed the ball out to Matty Field who burst through the Hull defence and nearly made it to the try line himself but had to pass to the supporting Rory Rendall-Tyrell who touched down under the posts, Jake Goodison added the extra’s. Scunthorpe were 7 – 0 up after less than 2 minutes of play. Shortly afterwards Scunthorpe were awarded a penalty and much to the displeasure of the Hull team Goodison stepped up to calmly kick the points. Scunthorpe continued attacking with strong runs by Jay Johnson making in roads inti the Hull half but the attacks were halted either due to knock on’s or infringements at the breakdown. Hull were awarded a penalty in their half but the kick didn’t cross the touch line and Mick Dunk cleanly caught the ball within feet of the touch line, the ball was quickly passed from one wing to the other and Field again showed the Hull defence his pace covering about 70 yards to score his first try of the day, Goodison again added the extra’s. The first half ended with the score at Hull Ionians 0 Scunthorpe 17 .
Scunthorpe made a few changes at half time but it was Hull that started the stronger and after Scunthorpe missed tackles they scored a good try which was unconverted. Hull continued to attack and were halted by Scunthorpe’s defence who managed to stop Hull scoring another try as their pressure caused the Hull player to knock on as he crossed the try line. Both teams attacked but neither were able to press their advantage and in fact neither team got close to the opposition’s 22. Scunthorpe began to exert intense pressure and after a series of pick and go’s from the forwards the ball was made available to Billy Hardy who calmly passed to Field who scored his second of the game, the ever reliable Goodison adding the extra’s. Scunthorpe were now pressing for the bonus point try in the last minute of the game they thought they had after prop Cameron Christie crashed over the try line of the game but failed to keep control the ball. The game ended with the score Hull Ionians 2nds 5 Scunthorpe 2nds 24.
