Scunthorpe 2nds hosted Driffield 2nds on Saturday 21/09 on a bright warm day in front of a good number of supporters, knowing that it would be another tough physical game. Scunthorpe kicked off and Driffield attacked but Scunthorpe were in no mood to allow any opposition player to break the gain line. After only a minute of play a chance of a penalty was missed by Jake Goodison. With only 3 minutes of the game played 2nd row David Ward found himself in space and after handing off would be tacklers touched the ball down between the post to give Goodison an easy conversion. For the next 15 or so minutes each team showed resolute defence but it was Scunthorpe who had the dominance particular in the forwards. Ward made another impact on the game by stealing a Driffield line out throw and scrum half Billy Hardy show good footwork by finding full back Charlie Turner who burst through the line to score Scunthorpe second of the day. Scunthorpe continued to dominate and after a good attack Driffield held the ball up on their try line, at the resulting scrum Scunthorpe stole the ball and after a couple of rucks George Mason cut a great line at speed to collect the ball and score, Goodison converting. Scunthorpe tried to play out of their half and tried to force the pass which caused a turnover and Driffield scored their first try of the game which was converted. At half time the score was Scunthorpe 19 Driffield 7.
The second half started with Driffield being the main aggressor and after only a minute of the second half they got the ball to their pacey wing who scored a good try which was converted to get Driffield within 5 points of Scunthorpe. Driffield started to attack with conviction using their big forwards to try to gain field position but they were met with tackles from the Scunthorpe players. Scunthorpe managed to creep back into the game and were awarded a scrum deep in Driffield’s half, Nu 8 Jack Brunt picked up from the base and made some yards ,the ball was passed onto the wings were Simon Fisher drew the tackler and passed the ball out of the tackle to find Turner on hand who scored his second of the day. Driffield again attacked but to no avail and on another scrum Brunt picked up from the base and evaded Driffield tacklers to score , Jess Matthews stepped up to get the conversion Scunthorpe 31 Driffield 14. The Scunthorpe scrum was dominant and after another scrum leading to quick ball centre Danny Bournes broke through the defence to score, Goodison adding the extra’s. Not to be outdone by his brother, Matthew Mason tore through the defence to score under the posts, Goodison again being successful. Driffield attacked the Scunthorpe line and after desperate tackling by Turner and Matthews they scored what was to be the last try of the game. The score at fulltime was Scunthorpe 2nds 45 Driffield 19.
After 3 games of the league Scunthorpe 2nds sit second in the league, Scunthorpe 2nds are at Heslam Park again next week hosting Wharfedale 2nds.
