Scunthorpe 3rds scrape league win.
Scunthorpe (Stallions) 3rds travelled to Hull Ionians ground as a neutral venue to play Driffield Cents in the division 1 league play off final. Having beat Bp chemicals with the same squad the Stallions travelled over the bridge full of quiet confidence, both previous games against opposition being losses this was going to a tight game.
The Stallions started lively, but not lively enough as the Cents open side cut a decent line through scoring under the posts 7-0 down. Working back up the pitch with ball in hand the Stallions looked strong as Driffield players laid down a smattering of defensive takles only to stop the onslaught by giving away a penalty which was converted to bring the scores closer. Driffield looked to play stock moves off every phase this was their down fall for Stallions first try as young Bournes read the move and just picked a pass to intercept and ran 70 yards to score under the posts.
Heads were beginning to lift and tails were up as the Stallions piled on the pressure pounding the Cents line time and time again the forwards and centres ran at the heart of the Cents defence working up the field. The blind side looked more and more appetising as the Stallions came up to the 5 metre line, quick ball down the blind let Acres muscle his way over the line.
As the second half started the Stallions fell asleep and allowed the Cents back into the game giving away silly penalties and yardage allowed 3 kicks to go over the posts bringing the scores to be within 1 point at 17 - 16 to the Stallions. Still not happy with the self destruct button pressing the Stallions played into the Cents hands by allowing open field broken play this allowed for their own blind side move and the winger converting into a try 21 - 17.
Clawing their way back into the game the Stallions again started playing their way and pounded the line with strong runners a penalty was given away by the Cent after time a quick tap put the greens into the red zone. Quick ball to a raging bull of run from Crompton saw him smash his way over the line to score 22 - 21.
Many thanks to all those involved and to Clugstons for helping out with the cost of the bus.
